Pre-race routine:

Up at 3am, raisin toast & milo for breakfast. Left the house at 4am. Weather was foul, considering going home. 100km later, everything was all right. Racked the bike, set up transition; got numbers written on, wriggled into the wetsuit & hit the start line. Trouble getting the Garmin to work (I think I pressed the wrong button, or didn't press it hard enough, so no data for the swim).
Event warmup:

Running late, so I barely made it to the start line with minutes to spare! So no warm up!
Swim
  • 08m 18s
  • 250 meters
  • 03m 19s / 100 meters
Comments:

It felt like I was towing everyone else! Lots of people all over me but that's the swim start for ya. I felt strong through the water. Actually got to swim properly, which felt really good. First turn at buoy was pretty messy, second was better. Felt a bit sea-sick with the chop but got over it. Swam home strong but then ran into the sand bank (almost literally!). Wobbly and clumsy out of the water but got over it quickly. Long run up a hill to transition. Made the lungs burn hard.
What would you do differently?:

Take the first turn a bit wider & try to catch a wave in at the end.
Transition 1
  • 03m 3s
Comments:

I really need to work on the bike mount. I feel so much like a Gumby! T1 went pretty well. I wanted to go under 3mins, so I'm not far off that at all. Spent too many precious seconds fiddling with the Garmin. Got the wetsuit off really quite easily considering it was the first time!
What would you do differently?:

Goal for Race 4: get helmet on while trying to get feet out of wetsuit. I will rate this transition as good but plan on improving it anyway.
Bike
  • 18m 15s
  • 8 kms
  • 26.30 km/hr
Comments:

The bike leg went okay. I need to work on the starting mount as that was very clumsy. Gear changes went very well and basically I had an enjoyable ride. I rode harder than the last 2 races, deliberately trying to push harder and get a better time. The course actually measured a proper 8km this time (not like the 6.88km last time). The hills were good, I enjoyed them because (a) they weren't as steep as my training hills and (b) they were short. I liked them.
What would you do differently?:

I think I pushed harder on the outward leg. I should try to conserve a bit more energy on the out and then push it home on the return leg. Hard to tell since I have no lap data at all. :(
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

So far, I've cut my T2 time with each race (Race 1= 2:19; Race 2= 1:57) so this is a good result today. I almost ran away with my helmet still on though...
What would you do differently?:

Not much, really. I felt it went quite smooth. I would rate this transition as excellent.
Run
  • 13m 21s
  • 2.5 kms
  • 05m 20s  min/km
Comments:

The first km was just trash. My legs were totally smashed from the ride. It eased up for the 2nd km but the damage was done. I felt crap on this run but apart from blaming the bike, I don't know what else to point the finger at.
What would you do differently?:

Drink on the bike. I can't drink and run at the same time. Too much splashing my face!
Post race
Warm down:

Long walk back to the car!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough sleep & the bike mount. I really must get more than 3hrs sleep. I did some experimenting during this race. Pushed harder on the bike to see what would happen (um, this trashes one's legs). Wore the wettie for the first time (and that did go well :) ).

Event comments:

I feel like I'm getting better with each race. I really want to try a much longer race but I'm signed up for this series of short races. It's probably a blessing in disguise, because this way I'll get lots more practice with the baby distances and that's not such a bad thing. Goals for next race: make the Garmin work properly!; really hammer the swim (the venue is renowned for flat water); chop at least 10sec off my T1; mount the bike more smoothly & ride with an effort that's sort between Elwood and Sandringham. Not much to ask, is it? :P
