Pre-race routine:

Didn’t sleep well since this was my first race. Woke up at 3:30am to eat a bagel and peanut butter. Left the hotel at 4:00am to drive to the course. Did the body markings and sat my transition area up. Go hungry at 6:00 am and ate a pop tart. Well hydrated…too many trips in the am to the porta-potties.
Event warmup:

Stretched a little...did not get into the water. Did not want to get cold before the swim as we wanted for our group to go.
Swim
  • 50m 6s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

Didn't push myself...wanted to ensure I had plenty for the race. Actually came out of the water at 48 mins and had to run up a hill. Calf still killing me (pain scale of 1-10 this was about a 20)...took 2 mins to get to the timing mat.

Needed to put cream/body glide on the neck...rubbed. First time this happened with this shirt on...go figure.

What would you do differently?:

Put body glide on the neck.
Transition 1
  • 04m 6s
Comments:

Took my time to put on plenty of cream. Also, forgot to take of the shoe cleat cover. I was not in a rush...wanted to ensure that I did not forget anything. I also had to pour water on my feet to get the sand off before the socks and shoes.

As I was running out with the bike area and felt my calf pop...believe this was the muscle finally giving in.
What would you do differently?:

Ensure I take the cleat cover off the shoes.
Bike
  • 3h 15m 19s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.20 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt great on the bike...could have went faster but needed to save some for the run (believe I could have avg 18-19 mph easily. Mentally concerned with how the calf felt coming up the hill from the swim...would I make it through the run). The course was flat and fun. Great support from the volunteers and cheering spectators. The training in the wind paid off...very little wind on the way out (some folks thought there was a head wind...not really). Had a blast on the ride. Drank about 120 oz of NUUN, 3 salt pills, 1 motrin and 13 G2 gels.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 04m 33s
Comments:

Had to move bikes over to get my bike into the spot. Did well getting into the socks/running shoes. Also, need to fill water bottle up...warm water is better than no water.

Had to wait to get into Johnny On The Spot. Too much hydration...
What would you do differently?:

Guess get back to the transition sooner to ensure I have plenty of room for my bike! Fill the water bottle up...thought I would be able to do as I left transition. First mile was long with no water.
Run
  • 3h 02m 51s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

Could still feel minor discomfort in the calf...but not like the major pain from the swim. For the first 6.5 miles had a 12:18 per mile pace. The last 6.5 miles had a 15:22 per mile pace. Legs started to die at the end. I ran out of NUUN around the 8 mile mark (explains why the legs were starting to cramp some around the 10 mile mark). I also could not do another G2 Gel. So I believe nutrition was playing part of the poor run at this point. Overall was going thru about 24 oz of water about every 2 miles vs 3 miles; took 2 salt pills, 1 motrin and 4 G2 gels.
Stopped at mile 10 to get a rock out of my shoe...almost fell here. Of course, I got additional rocks in the shoes...did not stop to remove and blisters were the result of that choice.

At the end of the run as I've crossed the timing mat a guy passes me...like he is really making a huge difference in his time. Slowed down to ensure I get a good photo.

Overall pleased with the event and my finish.

What would you do differently?:

Stop and remove the rock, carry more nuun and stick to the nutrition plan.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked to meet family and get lots of hugs. Great to see them at the transitions, on the bike course, and the run course.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not sticking to the nutrition plan during the run.

Event comments:

The volunteers were awesome-THEY ROCK! Extremely helpful, supportive, and motivating! The aid stations on the run were exceptional. This was a great race, and I had a blast during my first half ironman.
