Swim
Comments: Started out good. Tried to stay a little to the outside. But realized I drifted to far the the right and then overcompensated and was too far left. Never seemed to get a good line. I also felt a little sluggish. What would you do differently?: work on sighting. Transition 1
Comments: Had a little trouble getting wet suit down so strippers could pull it off. Got a little hung up on the arms. Once wetsuit was off, had good run the racks and I thought I was able to get helmet, race belt and glassed on ok. Ran with Bike to exit and hopped on ok. I had my shoes clipped in and used rubber bands to hold shoes in place. I waited until I was up to speed this time before putting feet in shoes. It was a little better this time, but could still use some improvement here. What would you do differently?: practice T1 and getting into shoes. Bike
Comments: I felt good on the bike and feel I could have even pushed it a little harder. I had one gel on the bike and just used HEED. Using the longer straw also seemed to help. Stayed Aero for most of the ride, except for a few of the hills when I stood for more power. What would you do differently?: not much. For this early in the season, I felt good. Transition 2
Comments: Not bad T2. I probably took my feet out of the shoes a little too early. I should have mapped this out better before the race so I knew best place to start taking feet out. What would you do differently?: check out where I need to take feet out before race. Run
Comments: The run is still my weakest link, but I do seem to be getting a little better. I had bad side stitch and cramp in upper abdomen early on. I had my watch on the wrong setting also so I didnt really know what pace I was going. I had to wait for the lap markers to see. The hill really hurt. I tried to sip some water, but I still cant seem to drink while running. Made turn around and saw the top Women coming quickly. I knew I would be past quickly. I still had no idea where I was in terms of my AG though. I never saw anyone pass me in my AG until mile 5 when I saw one person pass me. What would you do differently?: Hill workouts Post race
Warm down: walked around and drank some water. Looked for some recovery drinks, but none were around. Very disappointing for a race like this. Event comments: Overall this is a nice race. I really like the course and the weather turned out great. But I am still disappointed that you need to check-in the night before. This basically means you need to stay over night somewhere near by which adds to the expenses. The swag was also disappointing and the t-shirt was weak. Last years was much nicer. The post-race food was also disappointing. Dry chicken and a pasta salad. It also took a few days for them to post the results and they were not correct the first time. If they are going to charge this much, they need to make improvements. I will most likely not do this race again because its too expensive for what you get. But I do like the course. This was one of my "A" races for the year. My goal was to use this to qualify for AG Nationals, but I knew it would be really hard. I needed to be below 2:30 to do that which was a big stretch for me. I did a 2:29 at Lobsterman last year, but that bike is shorter and Mooseman is earlier in the season. Plus, I hear that Mooseman is really hilly. Would I really be ready this early. Luckily, I qualified at a race 2 weeks earlier (King Pine) so that took some of the pressure off. But I still wanted to do well and make up for last years fiasco (I decided not to race after they canceled the swim and delayed the start by 2 hours due to the rain and lightning).
Drove up on Fri night to sign in. It was cold and windy when I got there and worried it would be like that for the race. Luckily it calmed down by morning.
I stayed in Gilford, NH for the night and woke up at 4am. Took a quick shower to wake up and ate a bowl of cereal and had some coffee. Packed up car and headed to the race around 4:45. Had to park farther away this year. Grabbed all my gear and headed over to body marking area and then went to set up transition area. While setting up, I realized that I left some of my pre-race food in the car. Oh well. I will have to make due with what I have. Ate a Banana and a Gel.
Was able to get a quick swim in. Water wasnt too bad. But I felt a little dizzy for some reason. could be the lack of sleep or pre-race jitters. Tried to stay loose and warmed up while waiting for start.
