Swim
Comments: Second to last wave to start at 8:55 am. Meant a starting the run in the heat of the day. Water temp too warm for wetsuit which was expected. Effort felt good, with turnover typical to prior races. Time was way slower than expected. Currents in the reservoir maybe? Can't explain the swim time. What would you do differently?: Not sure? Transition 1
Comments: Decent T1, a little struggle to get the jersey on when dripping wet. Bike
Comments: Bike was the only discipline that came close to plan. Fairly strong winds out of southwest and rising temps into high 80's wore down many on the course. The tailwinds on some of the legs were fantastic, though. Legs were dead most of the course, could not find a rhythm, and could not get comfortable. Toward the end felt hot & dehydrated but stomach was full of fluids and couldn't take any more energy drink. Mouth was parched, should have taken water at the aid stations but stayed with the energy drink. Came off bike feeling tired and overheated, exact opposite of where I had trained. What would you do differently?: Many guesses here. Training program may have been 2 weeks too long, felt like I peaked much earlier than planned. Next time I'll try one bottle of energy drink and one bottle of water vs. two bottles of energy drink. I was worried about not enough calories on the bike, but with the aid stations I would have been fine. Transition 2
Comments: Congested at dismount line, no real opportunity to run to rack. Legs were dead anyway and mentally I was in a bad place with the off swim time and rough bike. Switched to run gear quickly but walked to the run out in order to regroup. What would you do differently?: The mental aspects of these events is most critical to executing the day. Need to work on mental toughness in order to not get discouraged by earlier setbacks. Run
Comments: In terms of what I'm capable of, the run was a disaster. In terms of the day, it's the best I could do. Temps were in the low 90s when run was started. First 1/4 mile stomach wanted to throw up the fluids and calories taken in during the bike. Walked the first two miles taking in copious amounts of ice water, cola and Perform trying to get the system cooled off and settled. Ice cold sponges were heaven stuffed into the jersey. By mile 3 body had recovered enough to begin alternating run/walk the rest of the course. What would you do differently?: Had trained in heat of day prior to this event, but temps were about 10 degrees warmer than training temps. Mentally I was in shambles at this point, which was the bigger issue. Post race
Warm down: Collected water, sodas, pizza, pasta, cookies and found whatever shade I could find. Didn't eat much in the end but drank like a fish. What limited your ability to perform faster: My mental fortitude cracking was the biggest blow. Perhaps being overtrained and worn out didn't help. And while I've been training in warm conditions as I could, the heat of the day was the final nail in the coffin. Event comments: Despite my disappointing result for my first HIM, I had a great time. The event is very well organized, with the previous RD bringing vast experience to WTC's first time running this event. It's a great course, awesome volunteers, and I gained a vast amount of learning from participating. I will be back. Last updated: 2010-12-05 12:00 AM
