Pre-race routine:

Had quite a few days in Cozumel to get ready. Took in the sights along with a dive of the area. Bike rides and runs along with pre swim of the course. Missed the pre meeting oh well did ok with what I knew. Had normal breakfast oatmeal eggs muffin coffee bathroom time. I was milking a GI issue from earlier in the week. Too much Ceviche. Cramping morning of the race.
Event warmup:

A lot of standing around walking around last minute checks drop off special needs bags. No event preswim day of race. Oh well didnt need it about to swim 2.4 miles. lol
Swim
  • 1h 11m 16s
  • 4156 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

First time mass swim start with 2300 people what a fight. It was fun though except for the first turn which was horrible for all. Terrible job of sighting got mixed up on the way back and was tracking the wrong side got in the middle of the course which got me out of the crowd but a little extra swimming.
What would you do differently?:

Sight better and push a little harder next time. I am a stronger swimmer held back work on pulling so I can use more arms on the swim. Next time. over all time was just like the pool. lol
Transition 1
  • 06m 53s
Comments:

Complete change little longer then normal chaotic changing area. Almost put on somebody elses shoes. lol
What would you do differently?:

Nothing for a long race keep the same.
Bike
  • 6h 23m 45s
  • 112 miles
  • 17.51 mile/hr
Comments:

Well lets just say I started vomiting at mile 10 on the bike and didnt stop. Every time I would take a drink and bend over to aero bars up it would come. Not to hot for me use to hotter. Dealing with GI issue from earlier. It came up and would not go away. Made for a long day. No mechanical issues so I was happy with that. Lots of flats out there broken chain and wrecks. Glad I was safe. Legs tried to cramp toward the end on the long stretch. Course put you into a long head wind crazy side winds and short tail wind section. By the third lap I wanted to kill somebody. lol
What would you do differently?:

Start the race healthier oh well stuck to the plan spin in the wind and push with the tail wind. If it was not for the vomiting I should have broke 6. Oh well next time.
Transition 2
  • 08m 48s
Comments:

Spent to much time in the tent thought my brother was caught in a wreck next time get on the track and go. tums in all bags. Sunblock wipes less is better didn't need belt especially when drink was boiling hot. Oh well
What would you do differently?:

Full change again keep it for long races felt good to have dry crap on for 5 minutes. lol dry mix in bottles on hot days add water would have been in my zone lol
Run
  • 4h 54m 30s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 11m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Came out good went right away to run walk method. Still vomiting every time I drank. Had to keep drinking didnt want to collapse. I knew some was getting in had not went to bathroom but I was not cramping. Drink a tube dump a tube on me. Gatorade every other mile. Tried bananas and pretzels which seemed to help. Did vomit them too but not all of it. I knew I was going to make it. Felt good was even going to break 13 hours.
What would you do differently?:

Run more walk less. Could have shaved some more time off but didnt want to over do myself seeing how I had been sick for so long.
Post race
Warm down:

Coming across the line hearing my name in Spanish made me laugh. It was definitely worth all the work. Cold wet towel and brother and friend at the end was awesome. Slice of pizza ramen noodles cold beer gatorade not. Back to hotel for hot tub burger fries beer and choclate milk. Big kiss from wife. Awesome I am a Ironman.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

GI issues which put me in a weak position on the bike.

Event comments:

Crazy support from the locals. It was awesome coming into to town on your bike streets closed and people cheering you on, able to see my wife every lap but one, missed her on a bike lap. She was the best support for me out there. Having my brother on the course was great too, seeing him on the run was good. Kept me up knowing he was never going to lap me. lol or me him. Overall awesome experience. Wouldnt trade it for the world. Work harder on the bike for next time.
