Run
Comments: I ran the first flat mile intelligently. I moved thru the large group efficiently. I believe my first split was about 8:50. The 2nd and 3rd mile I stayed over to the right to allow some runners to pass. I moved up the hill steadily there were a couple of short pitches that slowed me down. I believe I was averaging 9:10 miles by the top of the hill. At this point everything went to hell. I was unable to push on the downhill due to my left knee being extremely sore. By the bottom of the hill it felt like I was walking. I ended up averaging 9:43 splits by the end of the race. Fair but it should have been better. What would you do differently?: It is hard to say what I would do differently on this race when my last leg was hampered by injury. As stated above I think I ran a pretty good race to the top of the hill. Not being able to make a downhill push is where I lost my decent time and dropped in my age group placing. Post race
Warm down: None, my knee was sore, I was cold and wet. I just proceeded to the beer and food line What limited your ability to perform faster: As stated in my run comments the downhill leg and my torn Meniscus were the only deterrent while on the course. With the injury I have only been running once a week with the other two designated run workouts being on an elliptical machine at the gym. Post race my right calf was a little sore I will need to work on getting my calves in good working order for future runs. With my legs injury free I can then start some decent speed workouts to drop my runtime. Event comments: Because there was no warm-down I immediately went to the Beer line which was quite long. For whatever reason I skipped the salmon chowder from McCormick and Schick’s. I went with the Guinness Stout which was a fair choice. There was an Irish band on the main stage that played two Drop Kick Murphy songs that I recognized. People were everywhere. While I was making my way thru the beer line there were 10,000 runners on the 5K course. I waited for Marcia, Peggy and Lisa at the designated place. The ladies were too wet and cold to want to do much so we went back to my office changed closed then went out to breakfast. All the big west-side breakfast hot spots were full. Looking back my only issue was my knee being injured. The weather is what I would expect for a March race. Last updated: 2010-12-15 12:00 AM

Shamrock Run
52F / 11C
Precipitation
Overall Rank = 138/264
Age Group = M 50-59
Age Group Rank = 138/264
Pre-race routine: Unlike most of my other races I had my wife and two her friends with her. I still stopped and got a Breakfast sandwich. Per my normal routing I sipped on Gatorade and took some aspirin about 30 minutes prior to the race.
Because Shamrock is such a large race and it being difficult to get three women to the race at a decent time I did very little warm-up. My warm-up was basically running and walking with some light stretching going from my work parking lot to the race start line. I felt it was an adequate warm-up. With the large number of runners I was unable to get out to a fast start so I kind of eased into the race in the first mile.
