Pre-race routine:

My parents were in town to see the Boston Pops, but they had to leave pretty early in the morning. My wife and I were out of the house by 9:45, as the race start is only 20 minutes away.
Event warmup:

Did some jogging around to stay warm, visited the port-a-potties twice, then ran back to the car to strip down into race clothes 15 minutes before the start. Got about 1.5 miles of warm up in with some short pieces at hopeful race pace.

Comments:

I went into the race not really knowing what to expect. I've never really run a 5k at my all out effort. My overall goal was to go under 19 minutes, and I was hoping to be around 18:45. I did a very small 5K on Thanksgiving where I ran 19:25, but I didn't want to lead and the first two miles of that race were at a 6:20 pace.

A 6:07 pace is 19:00, so I was hoping to be in the 6:02 range for 18:45. However, mile one was a bit faster at around 5:55 and I was feeling pretty good. I decided to maintain that pace. Mile two came in at 5:56 and I still wasn't really laboring. I decided that there wasn't any reason to hold back for that last mile, so I gave it all I had at the end. Mile three was at 5:45 and the last 10th was at 5:26. I actually didn't feel dead at the end - I probably could have even been a bit quicker!

Overall, I'm pretty surprised by my results. Based on my training I didn't think I would go this fast. Now I can see going under 18:00 by just upping my run volume a bit.

My next big race is a half marathon at the end of February, and I'd love to be around 1:25 in that race.
What would you do differently?:

I guess I can continue to increase my weekly run volume. I'm around 35-40 mpw right now. I'd like to be in the 40-45 range come spring, so that's not a drastic jump in mileage.

Nearly all of my runs have been in zone 1 (70-80% of LTHR) and I'll keep it that way. Doing one major speed workout every 10-14 days has been working well so far.
Post race
Warm down:

Waited for my wife to finish up. She set a PR of 23:27, which she was super happy with. We did a bit of a cool down and visited a few of the pubs that had free drinks for finishers.

Event comments:

I'm stoked with my results from today. Now I can get back out and keep the training up to get ready for next tri season!
