Swim
Comments: Should have known this swim would have issues. We were the 4th wave out and the two waves in front of us had people floating/backstroking by 100m. I still decided to start in the middle of the line, middle back of the pack. MISTAKE. I should have started inside of the pack or at the front. I ran into way too many people backstroking and got boxed in several times. I then made the mistake of trying to go outside of the line and found myself way off course. Good news is that the swim felt easy for the first time ever. What would you do differently?: More OWS to improve my ability to sight. Think strategy at the beginning of a swim and not just "Lord please let me survive this swim". Transition 1
Comments: The transition area was HUGE, and I was in the rack furthest from every exit/entrance possible. This is going to happen to someone at a race this size, but WHY ME???? LOL. What would you do differently?: Not much. Get smoother in transition. Bike
Comments: PR!! The timing company had this as 14 or 14.5 miles so my mph looks better in the results posted online, but still my previous best avg mph was 21.5. Fast track really and I didn't push uber hard because I knew it was starting to get really hot and if I did the run would be a sufferfest. Lots of people riding on the left that weren't passing. Was somewhat irritating but I kept my tongue in check. What would you do differently?: Not much. MAYBE push a little harder. Transition 2
Comments: Not much here. Shoes didn't really want to slip on correctly but that took all of about 2 seconds to fix. What would you do differently?: Move faster Run
Comments: So about a mile in the heat hit me and I kept settling in to my long run pace. GRRRR. I'd get my pace down consciously to 7 min then I'd look down and I was back up to 8. Fought this the whole way. Will say the volunteers on the run course were awesome, especially the guys with the ice cold sponges. Rock stars. Nice course. What would you do differently?: Could have gone harder. Irritated with myself that I let the heat get to me mentally and I had gas in the tank by the end. Poor execution of my running plan which was to find a groove for the first 2 miles and then suffer at a higher pace for the last mile and a half. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and found my wife and girls. Lots of water and then over to the CyTri tent to hand for as long as the little ladies would hold out. What limited your ability to perform faster: Inability to look at the swim as a part of the race and not something just to survive. Also need to get a ton more OWS practice in to help my ability to sight. Event comments: Always a good race put on by Aaron. I was skeptical of a sprint this size but it went off pretty much w/o a hitch. Very happy with everything. My wife was of the opinion the crowd and atmosphere was a bit tough to chase a 2 and 4 year old around in. Last updated: 2010-12-23 12:00 AM

Got to the race site just as transition was supposed to open. Thought I'd get in early. Apparently so did everyone else, because the line for body marking was long. Anyway, got inked up by some overly chipper volunteers for 5:20 AM and set up my transition area. Proceeded over to the CyTri tent to see who was there. Shot the breeze for a few minutes and then headed to warm up.
Jumped in the water to see what the visibility was (6 inches maybe) and how warm the water was (hot tub) plus get in 100-150m of swimming. Not bad. Felt fast, which for me is new. Then got a half mile or so jog in and stretched out a little before it was time to go.
