Swim
Comments: Course appeared to be spot on as far as distance. I was a little worried because I chose to start with the corral they referred to as "Elites" versus "competitive". This was a relatively small race and I wasn't sure how many/if any "Elites" were there. I aimed to be top 10% in this race, so I figured that would be the best place for me. This was a TT start and I don't think I got passed by anyone....but I passed 3 or 4. Navigation was decent. Still could be better. Coming back in was right into the sun, so it took me awhile to find the swim exit to actually have something to swim to. So, I just tried to follow the swimmers ahead of me until I could spot the exit ramp. What would you do differently?: Nothing Transition 1
Comments: Fastest T1 in age group Only 2 seconds slower than fastest T1 overall. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: OK bike I guess. I was hoping to average around 22 mph. Got on the bike and began to get up to speed. Turned my computer on and ....no reading. I must have put my tire on when we got to the race to where the magnet was facing the wrong direction. So, I had no idea my pace during the bike portion of the race. I just went as hard as I could. At the end of the race, when I went back to transition I had a flat tire, and I also noticed that my front brake might have been rubbing just a tad. Probably the difference in 22 mph average and my 20.6. There was just something off, I could tell with my power at certain parts of the race and I'm thinking it was the tire pressure and possibly the brake rub. What would you do differently?: Must check bike before race to make sure everything is in order. This has happened before (front brake rub) and it could easily be averted if I just remembered to give the bike one last look before leaving transition. Not sure when the tire got flat. I could tell it was a slow leak. As it had about 10-20 PSI at the end of the race. Transition 2
Comments: Good T2 What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: I wasn't sure how the run was going to go. With me knee issues, I have really cut back on my runs. Nothing longer than 4 miles or so in the least 3 weeks. While the run could have been faster under different circumstances, I was pretty happy with it. This course has a couple of good hills and I felt like I paced it well. I didn't get passed by anyone and I passed 5 people. The course was a little shorter than the advertised 3.5 miles. I mapped it on MapMyRun and it was closer to 3.35 miles. Still averaged 7's and had no knee pain. So, all in all, I'm happy with the run. What would you do differently?: Nothing Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of run training lately. Possibly flat tire and brake rub. Also no computer on bike cold have been a mental thing for me not knowing how fast (or slow) I was going at any particular time. Event comments: Probably the best race I have ever been a part of. And it was the first year. Just incredible how nice a venue, how well organized, how many volunteers, how nicely laid out the bike and run course was...just can't say enough about this race. The only concern is that with a 3 loop bike, and 326 participants it could have been considered a little crowded at certain points. With as well put on as the race was, I definitely see it growing and if it gets too big, the bike course will get way crowded. They may need to look at changing up the course a bit if that happens. Got up around 5:00, ate a cliff bar and had some coffee. Got dressed and left the house around 5:45 to get to transition around 6:00 or so. Joy had a flat when we took her bike out of Expedition, so I switched the tube out for her in the parking lot before we headed in.
Stretched and swam about 100 yards or so.
