Pre-race routine:

Had a bagel and went to transition where my bike was already and setup my gear.
Event warmup:

Stretched a little then put on my wetsuit and swam for about 2 minutes.
Swim
  • 21m 48s
  • 1000 meters
  • 02m 11s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swam very well. I am getting a lot better at this swimming thing. I did have a little veerying off to the left but only 2 times.

Cut nearly 10 minutes off the time I swam at the Tribute to Armed Forces Tri 1000m swim!

It was great to finish with the majority of my wave and to even pass people from the previous waves. I also did not have anyone from the wave behind us climbing on my back!
What would you do differently?:

Just keep working hard on the open water swimming and get to swimming very straight. Swimming with the AZ Tri Club has vastly improved my swimming.
Transition 1
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

Got my wetsuit off pretty quickly. Had a GU and was off and biking!
What would you do differently?:

Felt it was a good transition and unless I was to try riding with my shoes on, I don't see much to improve on. (transistion was almost the same as the Tempe International and I did not have a wetsuit on at that one)
Bike
  • 54m 17s
  • 18.64 miles
  • 20.60 mile/hr
Comments:

That was a mean bike ride. I pushed myself through it and did a lot of out of the saddle riding while climbing hills. Right when you thought it would get easier, there was a mean wind that seemed to shift to a head on wind sometimes in both directions.

My speeds on the course ranged from 11 to 37.8 mph.

Passed many people and was only passed by Elites that started before me and were riding their second loop up at Point Loma. The others that passed me were passed back and not seen again!

Flew down the hill to transition.
What would you do differently?:

More hill climb training.
Transition 2
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

Long run through transition. I did have a very good spot in transition! Stopped and checked my shoes to make sure they were on good. Really did not need to because they felt the same before and after I checked them.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe just a quicker dismount and skip checking the shoes. The funny feeling was just from changing from bike to run. Maybe some more bike/run bricks would help.
Run
  • 44m 19s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt really good on the run. Held a pretty steady pace throughout and reeled people in the whole way. Sprinted to the finish line. I did not like where we had to run on tile sidewalks that were quite rounded.

Got many cheers of Go Chivas because of my Chivas jersey.

What would you do differently?:

Ran well, just would like to continue to get faster. It will come with more training.
Post race
Warm down:

Discovered that my Puma Tri-Socks gave me a blister on the upper side of back of my left heel. There was even a little blood on my shoe. I then walked around bare foot carrying my shoes, ate a banana, drank 3 beers and had a cliff block. Then when I went to transition I drank a Cliff Mango recovery drink.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to do more hill work on my bike and more time in the saddle. Would be easier to do if it wasn't so hot outside.

Event comments:

I was disappointed in the beer garden. If you are going to advertise a beer garden you should really have more than a keg of Michelobe Ultra. Also, it is very hard to find parking around the transition area, we got lucky at the check-in but my friend had to walk a ways to get the car while I was getting my bike and gear from transition.

Otherwise it was a good challenging race! I'll probably do it again next year...
