Swim
Comments: Very poor job of navigation. I was all over the place. Hard to sight with small buoys far apart and low practice/skill on my part. What would you do differently?: More open water practice, try to catch a draft. Transition 1
Comments: Long run up to transition, then some trouble with the suit and the helmet straps. Took it easy to be sure nothing was forgotten. Saw that Doug was already gone, and heard Rob shout for me while he was coming to his transition spot as I was leaving transtion. What would you do differently?: Be more efficient, have a greater sense of urgency. Bike
Comments: Felt better than last year, but still not smooth on the bike. Had a course bottle lid break off within the first five miles, showering me with my Powerade. Nothing like having a sticky trisuit/glasses/face/bike for the whole race. Kept using some of the on-course water to rinse off. Bottle exchanges were mostly smooth, but I botched one on the second trip through Newhall. Stuck with my nutrition plan pretty well, using the on-course Heed and water, my remaining bottle of Powerade, and three packs of Clif Shot Bloks (one Blok every three miles). Ready to be off of the bike by the time I was back to the park. What would you do differently?: Train more on the bike, practice hills and consistent cadence. Transition 2
Comments: Bathroom break extended time in T2. Had to go. What would you do differently?: Less 'urgency', unlike in T1 when I needed more urgency of a different type. Run
Comments: Ran fairly well, definitely my strength. Passed lots of folks, didn't get passed at all. Walked each aid station and used ice and water for the cooling effect. Had to walk/run up the final hills, with a 100 run paces to 50 walk paces alternating pattern. Felt like I gave a total effort and had not much left in the tank when heading across the finish line. What would you do differently?: Pace and train the bike better, so I have more left for the run. Post race
Warm down: Grabbed some food, reunited with Doug and Rob, and grabbed some more food. They had awesome times for their first half-IM! Nice job guys! Event comments: Wonderful experience. Hassle free with lots of course support/volunteers. Last updated: 2011-01-08 12:00 AM

Up with Doug and Rob early, fueled up (Clif Bar, Sport Beans with caffeine, bottle of Powerade), packed up, and got to transition early. No snags.
Swam a bit, and watched waves 1-5 go off while we stayed in the water in the beach swimming area.
