Swim
Comments: Seeded myself towards the right and not far from the front. Headed out around first bouy and thought I was doing ok. I think I wandered further away from the bouys than I wanted to but I always seemed to be within a couple of yards of other swimmers. I caught some of the prior wave which surprised me for such a short swim. I was disappointed to see the time upon exiting the water. I know my swim capabilities and while I will never win at this discipline I am better than this. Time does include the stair climb to transition. What would you do differently?: I should probably have found the time to get at least one more open water swim in the week prior. Plus just work on swimmung in general. Transition 1
Comments: I am not really sure where I lost the time. I honestly figured on this being closer to 1:15. But since my watch time matched the official time I need to figure out where I am wasting time. Mike and I were racked next to each other and he and I came in and out of transition together. What would you do differently?: I better practice more. Bike
Comments: I took off on a mission to catch Dud! I was focused on pushing the bike while trying to save some for the run. One of the benefits of being a cruddy swimmer is I get to pass a lot of people! I worked on staying in aero, and was good with that for the most part. Only time out of aero was to drink some Infinit and for the sharp turn at the turn around. Of course the newly paved road made the ride smooth. After the turn around I saw Mike coming down behind me so I gave him a shout out. Not sure if he knew it was me or not, he was in some pretty heavy traffic at the time. Now if I had done the math on my swim time and knowing what Dud normally swims I would have figured out that I wouldn't catch him on the bike, but it was good that I didn't now as I pushed the bike harder than I have in a tri before so that was good mental training for later races this year. Interesting side note, my garmin and my power tap both had the bike speed just under 19.8, which I am happy with . When the race results came out it showed something like 18.1 which was a disappointment. THEN, when I loaded the time in the calculater for this report it also came up with the 19.76. Not sure of the relevancy of any of this, other than wanting to see 19's and preferably 20 something mph bike averages for these races. What would you do differently?: Just keep training consistently Transition 2
Comments: I got off of the bike well and into transition very smoothly, but then I couldn't find my row. My race number was 604, but for some reason 406 popped into my head as I hunted for my spot. Finally after probably 20 - 30 seconds I remembered where I was in relationship to the finish line and I found my spot. Probably would have had a decent transition, not great but certainly better than I did. What would you do differently?: I hear Dudley talk about the pink towel, he may be onto something but I need to be smarter for sure when setting up transition. Run
Comments: Took off out of transition hoping to hold on to a strong pace. The run course is pretty flat and a simple out and back so you get to see people coming back in, which is nice to get some interaction with them. First mile clicked off at 7:30, not bad lets hold onto that. Like I said the course is flat, but the 2nd mile is a slight up hill grade for part of it. About a mile and a quarter in I finally see Dud heading back in. Probably said the wrong things as I think maybe my "I am coming for you" comment helped him find another gear! Mile 2 at 7:47, better pick it back up! So I hit the aid station on the return for a gulp of water and the rest down my back an push on! Mile 3 back down to 7:35, better but too late. Sprint it into the finish! What would you do differently?: Just keep working on improving my run, but more importantly the bike. Taper, or at least not run a 5K the day before. But this was a train through race and the 5K was a good run! Post race
Warm down: Grabbed some water, found Dudley and congratulated him on beating me again! He had a great race!! Waited for Mike to come in, then packed up transition and headed to the post race feast! What limited your ability to perform faster: genetics, age, size, not swimming enough! Event comments: This was my first year doing this race even though it is pretty close to home. Sorry I have waited as it is a lot of fun! If only the water was warmer! It was a lot of fun to have a group of us having a little smack talk and make the race a little bit of a group competition. Thanks Mike and Dud for the push! Last updated: 2011-01-09 12:00 AM

I had packed everything the night before. I woke up about 4:15 made coffee and a little breakfast. Loaded everything into the truck and headed down to Dudley's house. Dudley, Kara, Mike, and I were carpooling so we loaded up everything and headed to Penn Yan.
Got checked in and got the bikes ready and headed to transition.
Transition was tight without much space between racks. Rows were assigned but not specific racks. I landmarked the row off of the finish line, which would become useful later on.
Wandered around a bit, found a rest room for one last time. We watched the Oly folks start thier race and the duathlons next, now it is our turn to get the wetsuit on and lined up.
Once in the water, I dove in and did 15 or 20 yards to get some water in the suit and to get over the cold take your breath away feeling.
