Swim
Comments: A very dry swim leg. Changed at the last minute to a duathlon, 2/12.25/2 Muddy! The run felt fine - 7:40/mi pace. I put out a big effort ~95%, especially considering the conditions. Am happy with the time. My run is finally coming along. Run 1: 2 mi, 15:20 Transition 1
Comments: Run to bike: the running shoes came off and the cycling shoes went on well. I did a flying mount at the line and was off. Just like last year, the transition area was very sloppy, and the mtb/spd shoes worked well running to bike-out and clipped in automatically. 50s was okay with this field and transition area. Bike
Comments: The course was on the slow side with mud, rooster tails, and swirling wind that sometimes blew from the south, sometimes the north. I put in a strong effort, stronger than previous races, and felt good. It took about 1/4 of a lap to find my speed and cadence, and I passed bikes that had passed me immediately after transition. Since I'd raced on Fiesta Island a few weeks ago, the course was familiar, and the only surprise was a big puddle at the bottom of the swale on the way down the island, but it wasn't a factor the final two laps. Transition 2
Comments: Not bad. 48s was in about the top 40% of a fast field. Run
Comments: My run didn't feel this slow, but it was enough to podium, and I felt strong at the end. I chased down someone in the AG for 3rd, and had a good kick for the last 300 yards. Run 2: 2 mi, 16:27 Post race
Warm down: Coffee and bagels, watched the always-great Tritonman games, and grabbed my 3rd place swag bag at the awards ceremony. What limited your ability to perform faster: The run's still coming along, that's the major factor. Event comments: Love this race in spite of everything that went wrong with the weather, the canceled swim, the late start, the sloppy T area, and the slush run off the island and back. Despite the added run leg, I was only 7s above my overall time goal of 1:08:00 (for the s-b-r). The bike leg was solid, but I will need to work on it to keep up with the guys from the big tri clubs. And man, this field was lightning-fast! 34 people beat 1:00:00 including 4 ag'ers. That took about 6:15/mi runs. I have work to do! Kept warm in lots of layers, racked, ran 1/2 mile or so. Had to duck into the car during the downpour that nailed most of the people who were stuck in the check in line. The sun came out, and I stripped down to my club jersey over a long sleeve base layer and cycling tights. Stashed the gloves and cycling vest in my transition bag, but didn't end up needing them.
Ran a little.
