Swim
Comments: Had done a few open water swims alone, with kayak support, but this was my first one in a crowd. For some reason no one in my wave wanted to be at the front of the group and I ended up farther forward than I intended. Got battered pretty good early and never really got a good routine going for sighting. At one point after rounding the buoy A life guard let me know I was getting off course. What would you do differently?: Get into open water more and work on sighting. I'm guessing I could have been a minute faster if I'd stayed on course more consistently. But not bad for a first OWS with a crowd. Transition 1
Comments: Tried to be slow and steady instead of rushing. No bike shoes so I was putting on socks and running shoes as well as a compression top. Took a swig of water before making the long jog to the mount line. What would you do differently?: Went about as well as I could hope for a first transition in race conditions and I was 5/11 in the age group for time. Getting a tri top so I don't have to put a shirt on after the swim would help. Bike
Comments: Took the first mile or so to get my legs going then I got into a comfortable rhythm. Played some leapfrog for a while. The flat ground, lack of wind and having people to chase led to a much faster bike time than I was expecting. Had been averaging 17 mph in training so was very happy with 19 mph. Got away with breaking the "nothing new on race day" rule when I had a gel at about the half-way point. Never had one before and probably would have bonked without it. What would you do differently?: Riding a 1978 Schwinn Le Tour I had some serious bike envy. Physically wouldn't do much different. Went about as hard as I could while still leaving something for the run. Transition 2
Comments: Didn't have to change shoes so it was just rack and get the helmet off. Took a swig of gatorade grabbed my iced down bandana and was off. What would you do differently?: 2/11 in my age group, didn't have much to do. If I ever get bike shoes I'll need to work to keep my time this quick Run
Comments: I know I'm slow, but this was slow even for me. My stride was too short for most of it. Was just determined not to have to stop and walk. Saw my family by the bike out and was able to give a little finishing kick. What would you do differently?: Run more and longer leading up to the race. Missed too many long runs in the training plan do to travel. Probably could have pushed myself a little harder as well to truly empty the tank at the finish. Post race
Warm down: Walked around the transition looking for my family. Downed a gatorade pretty quick. Then grabbed a Gondola, sat and watched other finishers and sipped water for a while. What limited your ability to perform faster: Sighting on the swim and missing long training runs. Bike was better than I expected. Event comments: Well run and well organized. This won't be my last triathlon and I'll definitely do a TriMom event in the future. Last updated: 2011-01-10 12:00 AM

Got to the site plenty early and just tried to take it all in. Was my first race and was probably a little fussier about setting up my transition than I needed to be.
Just some light stretching. Warm-up swim time was limited and I had too long a gap before my wave.
