Swim
Comments: Before race started, I really debated even doing it. I had been sick for last three days and took these days off completely. I was still not feeling great at the start, but the nice ocean and sunrise motivated me:) I just changed my expectations to just have fun and enjoy it. We started about 20 feet on the beach and was a running start. Put myself on left front of group and that worked out well and lead to straight shot at first buoy. I was feeling good, but everyone went right of the turn so decided to keep my line and not worry about draft. This was great for a while, but probably could have shaved time off by following the group. Never really found good feet to follow so just practiced sighting and going on my own. Felt like I had decent pace, not hard, but could tell was not taking it easy either. I have been swimming all winter at least 2x per week so though my time would have been much better that it was. Some said current was tough, but I just think I did what I could do with cold and not drafting. Would have liked to have been another minute or so faster. What would you do differently?: Work on the draft and get better starting position behind FOP swimmers. Transition 1
Comments: Pretty long trip back to transition and my bike was close to bike out so that was good. Didn't rush my pace to the bike and seemed to have method to my madness. Helmet went on well, but problem when I put on sun glasses and they were totally fogged. Took another few seconds to grab towel and wipe them off. Could have done that on the bike I guess. Rode with feet on the shoes until out of the park and on the road. This worked well for me and got me out of traffic. Had good mount and was on my way. What would you do differently?: Anti-fog on sunglasses? Must have been the conditions that morning, this never happened before. Bike
Comments: My legs overall just were not there as they should have been. I had trouble holding over 23 and should have been 24ish. Wind was tough to figure out, but I am guessing it didn't factor much. Since I started in last waive of the swim, there were plenty of folks to pass. I was only passed once, but also knew that I had quite a bit of swimmers ahead of me. Gave it my best and had fun on the bridge. What would you do differently?: Confident I could go faster, but this was big improvement over same race 2 years ago. Like to see 24mph avg with these ideal conditions. Here is another tip: When attaching your shoes to the bike, make sure your rubber bands are short enough to break off! When I looked after the race, one of my shoes still had rubber bank attached and was still connected to my back wheel skewer... Not sure how possible, but lesson learned, get better rubber bands. Also forgot to reset bike computer prior to race and didn't check cadence sensor which did not work either. Thankfully I did not have high expectations for this race or would have been more upset at myself for these stupid mistakes. Transition 2
Comments: I had to pass a lot of folks when we entered the park. Already had feet on top of shoes and had one of my better side dismounts in a while. Rack was just a few feet into T2 and had easy time. What would you do differently?: I had to sit to put on new shoes cause the tongue of shoe was getting stuck and twisted. Even with speed laces it was a chore. Have to work on this part. Then I was pretty slow in trotting to exit. Run
Comments: Legs were a little heavy, but not as bad as I thought. I must have missed the first mile marker if there was one, never saw it. We came up to first water station and person in front of me grabbed both waters from a volunteer and I had no choice but to keep going. It was fine really, just would have been nice to cool off midway. We hit the turnaround and I felt good. No clue what my pace was, but was passing most so was good with it. I knew this was not going to be one of my better runs with my cold. I had little kick for the last part of run and just picked up pace last 1/4 mile and cruised in. Beat my run split from two years ago by 1:30 so must be making some kind of progress:) What would you do differently?: Not much, could have picked up pace I suppose, but I was ok with this run. Post race
Warm down: Grabbed bottle and went to catch my breath. Took a sip and it was coconut water drink (gross)... Went back and got a bottle of water. Went back to transition and packed up my gear and cooled down. Did remember to get my ring from the timing strap! Looked at results afterwords (forgot to hit stop on my watch at the finish) and got some food. Said hello to a few folks I knew at the race and decided not to stay for awards. What limited your ability to perform faster: Really just my cold and focus on the specifics. I rushed in transition prior to race and I never do that, normally get there too early. Lead to silly mistakes. Event comments: This was 20th anniversary of the race and was well done as usual. Conditions were perfect and nice day to race. Last updated: 2011-01-10 12:00 AM

woke up and did normal routine. Had my bag and bike ready night before so pretty easy going. Left house around 5:45am. I wasn't in a hurry as my swim wave was 8th and last to go off. Got to race site and parking was filling up. Took longer than I thought to find a spot, but it worked out. Still had to pick up packet, chip, body mark etc and it was about 6:30am so had to hustle before they closed transition and still had to find restroom. In my hurry, I forgot a few things which was reason I did this race in preparation for HIM next month. Have not raced since October so wanted to get the kinks out. More on what I forgot later...
Everyone was on the beach and I knew I had another 30 minutes for our wave so I found restroom and took my time walking down to beach. Got there as first wave was going off. Saw a few swimmers with same cap as mine, but they must have ran out of different colors, but it did worry me a second. Had plenty of time to get in the water and warm up a bit. Ocean was perfect! I forgot to leave ring at home and was looking to leave it with someone at on the beach, but didn't recognize anyone. So I just took it off and put around my timing strap hoping I would remember when volunteer took it off. Didn't care to have flashy medal piece around my ankle right after shark season, but better than lost ring I suppose.
