Swim
Comments: Pretty ideal swim conditions. Downstream with a fairly heavy flow with the recent rain. I think we even had a tailwind :) Since this is not a USAT sanctioned course, wetsuits were optional. I thought I might be a little warm with reported 80 degree water temperature, but I was fine the entire time. I didn't really get a good draft off of anybody. I think this might be partly because this is such a wide course its easy to lose people. What would you do differently?: Get behind some faster feet. Transition 1
Comments: Not much to say only that I need to knock 30" off this. The only thing I think is to run faster out of the water. I always seem to just sorta jog. I mostly do this to try and get my HR in check from the the swim, but I don't think I was really spiking from that swim. I did get passed by someone running much faster than me. This happened at my last T1 a few weeks ago. What would you do differently?: pick up the pace. Bike
Comments: Well my new weakest leg of my race went relatively well for me. Heading out I was trying to hang around 21mph in the hopes that I would average 20mph overall. After about mile 3ish, is seemed like we were heading dead into the wind, and since we are hugging the river, and going upstream, I am assuming we are overall heading uphill. I look down at my speed around mile 6ish and I am struggling to hold 17mph. I am thinking..."come on Fort Hunter, I need to turn this bike around and head downwind/downhill". I had a pretty nice turn at the halfway and finally got my wish. I think I was holding roughly around 22-23 heading back. What would you do differently?: Not much. Just train harder on the bike. Transition 2
Comments: The only thing that sorta screwed me up was racking my bike from behind and ducking under the rack. I think I did this because someone was in my way. When I ducked under, the small muscles next to my hamstrings said, "OUCH". Not a big deal, just never felt it before. I struggled a bit getting my new shoes on, as the tongue seemed to get caught. I probably didn't lose that much time. But I also struggled getting my Garmin off the bike and onto my new quick release strap. When you are pressed for time, it doesn't feel anything like "quick release" :) What would you do differently?: Same as T1 comments. Just pick up the pace. Run
Comments: Not much to add here. Goal was to head out at around an 8' mile and kick hard at the end. The only issue was where to pick that kick spot. It ended up being just at the bottom of the hill probably about 1/8 of mile too late for my goal. But oh well. I finished strong and somewhere around a 5:45 pace. What would you do differently?: Start kicking an 1/8 of a mile sooner Post race
Warm down: Drank water and hugged the Mrs. Event comments: All I can add is that this was my 1st race last year and my goal was to shave off 15 minutes. Instead, I knocked off almost 22 minutes so I am very happy. Last updated: 2011-01-16 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4:00am and drank coffee and ate an english muffin with peanut butter. Transition is on a first come first serve basis and opens at 5:30 so I wanted to leave moms house by 5:10. At 5:00am I seem to be missing sleeping beauty. So I woke up little miss sunshine at 5:00 and told her the good news that I plan to leave in 10 minutes. Needless to say, she wasn't terribly thrilled and we ended up leaving by 5:37 after her oatmeal was made of course. Arriving later than I hoped, all the good spots by the bike out were taken. So about 4 racks back I spied a spot next to a woman who looked like she was finishing setting up, and as she turned to look at me...its my cousin Katie?? So random and cool. So I set up next to cuz.
Walked to the north end of City Island, put on my wetsuit and swam out about 100 yrds and back. My head met another head of someone else warming up. We clobbered each other pretty good. We both apologized and moved on with out incident.
