Swim
Comments: I wasn't able to find anybody to draft on. That's both good and bad. It's bad because I was swimming in an area where there were far fewer people. The reason there were far fewer people is because out in the middle of the river the current was stronger. I was too close to the sea-wall. The waves were larger than expected. I did a good job of keeping my arm bent when I got tired, but I didn't do a good job of keeping my head in a good position. I didn't have to sight often, and when I did I used a blue police boat light for most of the swim. What would you do differently?: Sadly, 2 people died on this swim. Transition 1
Comments: Put the 310xt into the cap for the first time. I did fine getting it out and onto my arm. I did a nice job running barefoot to transition and getting ready for the bike. Because of the rain I had to put the helmet in a different direction from usual but putting it on this time I didn't have issues with the strap. 52/393 in AG What would you do differently?: Save time and not wear socks? Bike
Comments: Passed a LOT of riders on the bike. On the way back especially I passed a lot of women. There were only maybe a dozen guys on the bike that I saw pass me. What would you do differently?: Go out 10% less hard the first 5 miles and pour it on more on the hills. Transition 2
Comments: I've practiced this transition a lot and I've gotten fluid with the motions in it. 25/393 in AG. What would you do differently?: Get Tri shoes that I can unclip while riding. Run
Comments: So I know this course like the back of my hand from living here. I did nicely running up Great Hill and Lasker Hill, but I didn't do as well running downhill. Typically I have better form than most running downhills and I can make up some time that way. Unfortunately my legs weren't 100% and I couldn't move my feet fast enough in order to maximize this technical advantage. Post race
Warm down: Walk through the chute and get a bagel and banana. Get some water and a towel. Pick up my bag and walk around wearing my medal. What limited your ability to perform faster: Running speed! Event comments: Great race. I will volunteer next year if I don't get it. It's unfortunate it was marred this year by rain and 2 deaths on the swim. 72/393 for AG - top 20% 345/2086 for gender - almost top 15% ;) Last updated: 2011-01-16 12:00 AM

I ate a banana and a frozen Uncrustables. I drank some coffee and put the rest in a mug and brought it with me. I brought my gatorade and water along as well. I packed shot blocks and took three 15 minutes before I started. I also drank about 10oz of water and gatorade mixture before the race.
A little bit of arm stretching and mental prep.
