5150 Triathlon Series
78F / 26C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 45m 34s
Overall Rank = 1208/2014
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 171/239
Pre-race routine:

Woke up and took synthroid which means I need to wait half an hour to eat food. Got my bag that was already packed and went to transition. Attempted to setup new aerodrink bike mount and failed. Screwed in one of the bottle cages instead, but just finger tightened instead of using tool- bad move. Setup transition including sunscreen (just in-case I was burning after bike ride). Mounted single bottle of gatorade and put out shot blocks.
Event warmup:

Went for a short swim. Felt fairly confident about how I would do. The conditions seemed serene compared to the chop near the pier.
Swim
  • 30m 32s
  • 1000 meters
  • 03m 03s / 100 meters
Comments:

Why do I bother to train if I'm going to swim this poorly. I might as well have doggy paddled the entire way. My entire race gets ruined b/c of a swim like this. I came out of the water thoroughly exhausted and the exact opposite of fresh. It made it so that I couldn't go as hard as I wanted in both the bike and the run. The bottom line is that I panicked and that I need to do OWS practice.

What would you do differently?:

Firstly I would have brought tinted instead of clear goggles since it was sunny. Secondly I wouldn't have held onto 3 or 4 surfboard and 2 kayaks. I need to do OWS practice. This really isn't the easiest thing to do being in NYC, but I have to figure out a way to get it done.
Transition 1
  • 05m 42s
Comments:

This was a good transition and compares nicely to the rest of the field. There was about a quarter mile run on the pavement to the transition area. I was smart and ran a good deal of it on the grass next to the sidewalk. Altogether much faster than my first T1.

Placed 115/239.
What would you do differently?:

It took me a long time to get my gloves on. I need to figure out how to get them on really quickly or just not use them. I think I must have lost 15-30s fiddling w/ the gloves once I got my bike past the start line.

Bike
  • 1h 13m 40s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.24 mile/hr
Comments:

My race plan was to stick at 180W for the bike. I wound up with a 179W average. I basically nailed it in terms of power output. I didn't come off the bike with dead legs; however I was more tired than I should have been because of the dreadful swim. I was also way behind everybody else in my AG b/c of the swim, so it was like I was out there racing on my own.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster ;) If I improve with my training before the next race I will up the power output. I think I may try purchasing an aero helmet. At >20mph and in aero position, it might add some speed.
Transition 2
  • 02m 7s
Comments:

This was a solid transition. The race laces helped me a lot. I didn't forget my race belt either and I put it on as I transitioned.

Placed 62/239 for T2!

What would you do differently?:

Not take a swig of drink before leaving and wait until the first mile marker.
Run
  • 53m 33s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

As per earlier comments about the swim effecting my bike, it also effected my run. I recognized this very early on and I decided to scale back my ambitions and try and run at an 8:45pace (accounting for walking through pit stops to drink). As it turned out, I nailed it! I think that spending time training w/ the 310xt and the pace timer helped me out a lot here. In fact, my first 5k differed by only 3 seconds with the second 5k. I paced really well given how I felt.
What would you do differently?:

I would have run harder. The fact is that I finished the race and I didn't feel as if I had left it all out there on the course. After the first 5k I should have attempted to run 8:30 or 8:15 pace, which was my goal going into the race. I was overly worried about the heat I think.
Post race
Warm down:

None required. Threw a towel over me and had a Mix1 drink from the sponsors.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The lack of open water swimming confidence, especially sighting and dealing w/ chop. I don't think I'm a bad swimmer at this point; however I think I have no confidence at all swimming in OW and it totally limits me when it comes to the rest of the race.

Event comments:

This race suffers from unwelcoming swimming conditions. For the last several years in a row the organizers have had to make last minute changes b/c of treacherous conditions where the race is supposed to go off.
