Overall Rank = 1/161
Age Group = M 50-54
Age Group Rank = 1/7
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30. Ate a light breakfast of banana, toast and coffee. Loaded my gear into the truck and left at 5:20.
Event warmup:

Ran a few miles before the race easy and a short ride to make sure there were no issues with the bike.
Swim
  • 04m 50s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Volunteered to start first which I am glad I did. Swam at a good pace but nothing to hard for the distance. I would say about the pace I do for a 1K TT. Had an issue with my left google getting water in it at the start which hindered my vision. Did flip turns the first two walls but with my vision off decided to just touch and turn under the lane lines to avoid a mistake.
What would you do differently?:

Probably get in a short swim to make sure the googles were sealed properly.
Transition 1
  • 00m 34s
Comments:

Usually have my shoes clipped in but decided to put them on in transition since it was on grass and a short distance to the bike start. Plus the road had some rough spots and I did not want to take a chance on hitting a pot hole while trying to slip my feet into the shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 30m 43s
  • 11.5 miles
  • 22.46 mile/hr
Comments:

Started the bike at good pace but nothing hard for the first mile then started to get into it. At the first turn had to back off as a truck made a turn in front of me and the police were not expecting anyone yet. About half a mile into the ride a policeman on a motorcycle came up besides me and told me that he would be escorting the lead bike around. So at each intersection he make sure that the officer there knew we were coming and had traffic stopped. The course had some rough spots and some turns that you had to slow down on to make them. One tight downhill S turn that I nearly took to fast and went off the road on. Had to lock up the brakes and started to slide but made it. The way back is fast with speeds up to 37 mph. I went about 3 minutes faster on the way back than the way out.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Felt great the whole time and could have pushed it a little harder maybe.
Transition 2
  • 00m 36s
Comments:

Got feet on top of shoes before dismount line. Had to a little difficulty getting on my right shoe. Grabbed my run cap and belt and off. But other than that uneventful.
What would you do differently?:

Put some TriSlide in the shoes which has worked great in the past.
Run
  • 21m 45s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

Had another escort on a mountain bike which helped warn the people on the path. Went out easyish and tried to use the downhill to get my legs into running mode. Once off the bridge and onto the path just tried to run in control but not push to hard. In retrospect should have worked it harder.
What would you do differently?:

Push the run harder than I did. I will start using my Garmin to pace. I think if I had seen that I was running 7 minute pace I would have gone faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Got some water and went for a 2 mile run along the course cheering on the other racers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My age? This was a good effort overall and as the season goes on will improve as my bigger races get closer.

Event comments:

Race was well organized and it was great to see some friends that I have not seen for awhile. Had a great time. First time I have won the overall in a race in a few years.

Course: Pool swim that I am not sure on the length. I have been swimming there a few times and some of the staff says it is a 50 meter pool and some say 50 yards. In a 25 yard pool my stoke count is 16-17 and for this pool it is 48-49 per length that is why I think it is meters.

Course: Out and back. Starts off flat for the first ~1.5 miles into a section of a downhill S turn followed by a somewhat narrow road twisting around for another mile. After this it is flat for a bit before some gradual climbing with a few short steep sections. The last mile gets a bit steeper where I had to stand to keep the momentum going.
