Run
Comments: This was just a fun run so I was going to take it easy and use it as a typical training run. Right after the start I saw Eric, Jen and Luke running (ok, Luke was in the jogging stroller, but he was still heckling everyone Eric passed) so hooked up with them. Eric went ahead of us with the stroller and Jen and I ran together. I felt pretty good for the first half, a few cramps would come and go. About 3/4 mile from the finish an ab muscle just under my rib cage cramped up and I had to walk about 1/4 mile. Jen stayed with me and I was able to kick it up a little and finish the last tenth strong. What would you do differently?: Try to run through the cramp, pick up the pace a little more and eat a good breakfast and drink some water before the run. Post race
Warm down: Walked around looking for some other friends who ran the 5 mile race. Couldn't find them so grabbed a powerade and headed to my truck. I had to get home and clean up to go to my neice's 5th birtday party. What limited your ability to perform faster: The farthest I have run since my half marathon in November is 3 miles and I haven't done that often. I wasn't expecting great things from this but I was a little surprised with the cramp. Of course, I didn't eat or drink anything before the race, which obviously contributed to being sluggish, along with not getting a good night sleep and some stress that I have in my life right now. Event comments: Nice size race, there was a good turnout despite it being so cold. Everything was well organized and there was tons of food before and after the race. They even had sonic biscuits and krispy kreme donuts and coffee. Three propane heaters were keeping people warm. The event t-shirts were long sleeve and look great. Overall I am really happy with this event and would suggest it to anyone, and the benefits go to the civitan camp for mentally and physically disabled kids, can't get any better than that. The original plan for this 5k was to walk it with my mom and two friends. Mom has been trying to get back into exercising and eating right and I wanted to help her. So we signed up for it together. Friday my mom AND my two friends tell me they aren't going to run because it's supposed to be 27. Of course I give them heck for it.
I didn't have a great night of sleep, so when I woke up at 6am I was SO tempted to ditch the run and stay in my nice warm, cozy bed. However, I had given my mom and friends so much heck for backing out that I knew I had to run. So I soak in a warm bath, dress in 3 layers and drive to the site. There was a great turnout so I had to park about 250 yards from the start. Walked to the start and huddled around a propane heater with some people I didn't know.
