Pre-race routine:

Stayed in hotel the night before and went to bed early. Got up and ate right away (2 hours before race). My stuff was all packed so I just had to put on my tri-suit and pack up the car. Got to the sight before it was light out, got my number, set-up my transition and went for a quick jog. Came back, aired up my tires, made last minutes checks, used the restroom and went to go warm-up in the pool.
Event warmup:

Did a 200 swim, then some pace 100's.
Swim
  • 06m 26s
  • 500 yards
  • 01m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

It's extremely aggravating when people don't put in the correct seed time because you spend the entire second part of the swim getting smacked and trying to pass people in a narrow lane. There were lots of swimmers in line to start so they need to keep things moving 15 seconds apart, but people need to put in the correct seed time, not just a guess.
What would you do differently?:

It was a good swim despite all of the people to pass. I wouldn't change much.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

I didn't get my transition split, but it felt very fast. Being my first tri I wasn't comfortable enough putting my shoes on while on the bike, so I put them on in transition. It went okay and very fast. I was happy with it.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, it was a fast transition.
Bike
  • 40m 56s
  • 13 miles
  • 19.06 mile/hr
Comments:

I'm still really shaky on the bike. I had just gotten my road bike 2 weeks before the race and was still trying to get used to it. I dropped a water bottle on the way, and was unsure about the whole pacing/drafting rules, so I was overly cautious. As I ride more I'll feel more confident to go fast into the turns.
What would you do differently?:

I will train on my bike more often and practice getting my water bottle out and in. Otherwise it was fun for my first ride!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

I had practiced my transition a few times before the race, so I felt ready to do it. I was in my zone and just did my thing. I tied a balloon to my area so I knew where to re-rack my bike. This may be a silly thing that only newbies do, but who cares, it put my mind at ease to find my transition area.
What would you do differently?:

Get a race belt. I hate pinning on my number to my running jersey. Plus, it's faster.
Run
  • 24m 39s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

My legs were pretty tired after the bike, but I picked up speed after the first mile and relaxed. I was having fun cheering other people on, and it kept myself motivated. The run was really fun. By the end I was sprinting into the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, great for my first tri.
Post race
Warm down:

I did a quick jog around the block to catch up with my husband who was on the course cheering me on earlier. Then relaxed with food and drinks.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training and being a newbie. It was fast enough for me!

Event comments:

The results were slow. My husband and I waste about two hours in the hot sun waiting for the results and then finally left because we need to get home. The showeres weren't open when I finished so I didn't get one after the race, they finally opened them after I was dressed. When I found out that Tuesday that I won my division, the race director promised to send the awards (hats), but after three emails asking for them, I still have yet to see my hat. Oh, well. It was my first tri so that's why I wanted it. The goody pack was cool though, with lots of freebies and a nice sweat towel. I would do this race again and have even more fun doing it with some experience.

Course: Out and back course around a beautiful lake close to the health club. I am so used to Kansas wind, that the OK winds coming off the lake weren't too bad. The turns were a bit tight for my level of comfort on the bike. The road was a walking trail used by lots of people so it was smooth in most parts, but rough in some. There were a few walkers, casual riders and in-line skaters on the path that you had to watch out for.

Course: Through a nice neighborhood running on the street. Large houses to look at and keep you entertianed when it starts hurting. Small inclines, that you wouldn't notice any other time, except for when you are racing a tri. The neighborhood home owners, put chairs out on thier front lawn and cheered people on.
