Swim
Comments: I was happy in the water but my flip turns were clumsy and I often bumped the lane lines (ouch!) What would you do differently?: Swim more before an event. Transition 1
Comments: I didn't practice transitions this year. Too cocky! What would you do differently?: Practice, Practice, Practice! Bike
Comments: I was happy on the bike - all that time in the trainer over winter seems to have paid off!! What would you do differently?: Nothing. I tried my hardest. Transition 2
Comments: I need to work on this, but Ben was there cheering me on so I ran with a bit more fervor than usual. I am totally guessing at transition time and pulling this amount of time from my officially reported run time. I almost dismounted too early. Run
Comments: I wish I could run faster. What would you do differently?: Lose weight. Workin' on it. Post race
Warm down: I stretched a bit and then watched Ben go. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing - I had a blast. My training has been hampered A LOT but I was fit and healthy for race day. Event comments: People left very early rather than waiting additional hours for others to finish. I understand why - it was Mother's Day after all. People are busy. I thought this took away from the race some. Last updated: 2011-01-28 12:00 AM

I had to compromise my usual breakfast routine a bit and have peanut butter crackers (the kind you get at gas stations!) as my breakfast. I stayed at a hotel with Ben and we didn't want to go driving around looking for a grocery store. All's well that ends well?
Ben and I scrambled to the race in the morning and arrived about an hour early (7:10AM). My stomach had been bothering me a lot - I thought it was nerves ('turns out it was probably my gall bladder after all). I soothed myself by taking a hot shower (which didn't drain so poor Ben never got a shower) and listening to the Decemberists on my iPod while I got ready in the hotel. I made up for my lack of caffeinated gel or beans with coffee that I watered down in the sink to cool down so I could gulp it. I'm sure this didn't help the IBS situation one bit.
I ran in and out of the transition area, rolled my socks up and put them in my bike shoes and finally practiced some flip-turns and acclimated to the water temp in a nearby dive pool. Because the swim had 15-second staggered starts, I didn't begin the race until 8:45. Ben began at about 10:00 and so we were able to watch each other race! - Very cool.
