Age Group Rank = 18/21
Pre-race routine:

I was among the early bird Sprint arrivals. I ran into a friend from the gym, Susan, who was in my age group. We got marked and waited for the gates to open. Once inside the transition area, I aired up my tires and gave the pump to Randy to take back to the room. Then, I stood around...drank my Accelerade...ate a Kashi bar...and talked to friends to keep the jitters to a minimum.
Event warmup:

None.
Swim
  • 30m 52s
  • 750 meters
  • 04m 07s / 100 meters
Comments:

In the beginning, I got too winded swimming freestyle and swollowed some water. So, I did the breast stroke for a majority of the swim. I did some back and side stroke also.
What would you do differently?:

Train more!
Transition 1
  • 07m 15s
Comments:

Went pretty well. I needed to catch my breath coming out of the water and didn't run much during the transition. My things were organized well and were easy to put on.
What would you do differently?:

Move faster. Jog/run more.
Bike
  • 56m 32s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 13.19 mile/hr
Comments:

Being from Houston, I train on the flat lands. The bike was challenging for me for two reasons. The grades/inclines and my knee problem. One MAJOR PROBLEM on the bike was that I MISSED the turn around (no one guided me in the right direction) and ended up at the dismount area after only one lap. I had to head back and do the second lap so I lost some time...how much? I don't know...maybe a couple of minutes?
What would you do differently?:

Train in a hilly areas as often as possible.
Transition 2
  • 03m 49s
Comments:

Easy transition. Went well. Walked most of it.
What would you do differently?:

Move faster...run/jog more.
Run
  • 50m 48s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 16m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

I would have liked to run more but my knee was not cooperating. I did run about 1/4 to 1/3 of the course and walked the rest. I took advantage of the downhills and ran those sections.
What would you do differently?:

Practice on some hilly areas.
Post race
Warm down:

None.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My knee problem and missing the appropriate turn around on the second lap of the bike.

Event comments:

OTHER than the bike mishap, the race went well and seemed to be well organized. There were lots of volunteers. There was plenty of water on the run which was important in the heat; and, plenty of post-race food. I will participate next year.
