Pre-race routine:

Slept well, got up around 7:00. Ate routine pre-race meal of Greek yogurt, berries, banana and granola. Also ate a few spoonfuls of scrambled eggs. Felt very calm and excited for race! Took later shuttle to LP. Drank water and ate one Hammer gel about 30 minutes or so before my wave started.
Event warmup:

None to speak of. But while I was waiting for wave start, I stretched my arms and shoulders.
Swim
  • 43m 23s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 03s / 100 yards
Comments:

Key to cold water swimming - acclimate! Get in the cold water, put face in, even if only for minutes at a time - during those ten days before the race.
What would you do differently?:

Still need to work on getting faster and swimming straight in open water. More open water swimming. Start closer to front of pack.
Transition 1
  • 06m 44s
Comments:

Couldn't get my wet suit unzipped so used the strippers as I had planned. I knew my hands would be frozen coming out of the water. Felt like I got my helmet and shoes on pretty quickly (no socks to fight with - glad about that). But then started shivering. Struggled a bit getting my shoes clipped into the pedals.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 3h 04m 25s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.22 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

Go even harder on the bike. I started to feel a little side ache coming on about half way through and slowed down. I probably could have pushed through it. Still need to work out kinks in nutrition.
Transition 2
  • 03m 12s
Comments:

Felt like a good transition. My legs felt fine coming off the bike (which indicates I probably could have gone harder those last ten miles or so).
Run
  • 2h 15m 21s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

Considering my lack of training for the run, I feel ok with this result. I just need to work on getting faster :) BUT, one of my goals for this race was to eliminate GI issues, and I did that. Didn't feel bad at all and enjoyed post race beer, food and friends!
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Enjoyed the post race atmosphere while waiting for my friend to finish. Got chilled, but just b/c I was wet.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of focused run training.

Event comments:

I love this race. This is the second time I've done it and I will be back again next year. I'm biased toward the Boise community since I lived there for three years, but they are some of the most friendly people you'll find. Volunteers are awesome. Got lots of encouraging compliments the following day while wearing my t-shirt too.

Course: Felt great on this swim. Thought it would be faster actually. No problems with cold whatsoever. Water felt great after having been in cold water at least 4-5 times in the last week or so. In fact, I should have started closer to the front of the pack since I was prepared for the cold water. No trouble sighting and swimming straight for first 1500. Last 500 was more challenging as I kept veering to the right of the markers and getting run over by guys, but that's to be expected in this race. Tried to draft at least once in a while but mostly focused on smooth easy stroke and breathing.

HR started out in low 150's. Brought it down to high 140's for last 20 miles of bike course (despite speeding up - maybe b/c it was downhill). Felt good about controlling my HR throughout the bike course.
Wind: Little
Course: I really enjoy this bike course. I couldn't believe there was no wind. Never happens in Boise! Shivered pretty badly until I started up the big hill ... kind of wished I had arm warmers, but then I was fine. Began drinking perpetuem as I pedaled up the big hill and sipped regularly (along with water) throughout.
