Swim
Comments: Couldn't be happier with my swim. I lined up in front which I usually do not do, but I had decided to swim this thing at my fastest. I wasn't passed. There were a few who lined up with me who were very fast - I drafted a tiny bit but they were much faster than me. I kept pushing throughout the entire time and caught up to a number of women from the wave in front of me. It was an awesome swim for me with zero contact - I just swam as fast as I could for the distance - it felt super short given all the training and the race the week before so I truly sprinted. When rounding the first buoy I was winded, but I kept pushing and got my wind back just fine. What would you do differently?: Nothing, awesome swim. Transition 1
Comments: I have a terrible time rushing through transitions. This year I did run/jog up the hill and I used the wetsuit strippers who were really great. There was no one there getting stripped so I saved some time taking advantage of that. Got back to my spot and moved as fast as I could - I just don't move real fast. My shoes with 3 straps (1 being ratchet) are slow to put on). But I remembered everything and really tried not to lose focus and slow down. What would you do differently?: I think my only choice here is to get more transition focused gear - i.e., triathlon shoes, not wear socks, clip shoes into bike in advance, etc. Bike
Comments: I gave it all and felt great about my effort. Having done the course the prior day in the pouring rain and taking 55 minutes, I was pretty psyched with my time. I was passing people as if they were stopped. Yes, there were people who were also passing me as if I was stopped - but I really felt great out there like I was lazer focused and gave top effort. I did worry about my legs a little bit because I was pushing pretty hard for me - but on this race I'd decided to push hard and see what happened on the run. So I kept pushing. What would you do differently?: Nothing at all - great ride. For me to average 20 mph with 155 watts of power - that's awesome. Transition 2
Comments: Again, I am a bit of a slow transitioner. The pictures of me getting off my bike are funny - I'm like an old lady. What would you do differently?: I think I'd probably have to practice this one Run
Comments: I didn't take any aid on the run course - I felt fine after the bike and decided to run my little heart out. When I started, I was worried, I felt like I was moving SO terribly slow. I was scared to see my mile 1 split. But I just kept telling my legs and feet to move one foot in front of the other and to see what happened. My 90 minute goal seemed in site at this point, so I decided to get to mile 1, see my split, and go from there. I wasn't changing my screen to look at my actual pace because I didn't think there was anything I could do about it - I needed to get my legs back before I could even try and push. So when I got to mile 1 and realized my pace was 7:41, I was psyched and shocked. I knew I was giving a pace I could withstand (or so I thought)... so I got this little jolt of energy and decided to stay at that pace. I did slow a bit in mile 2, to 7:54 - but overall wound up averaging 7:44 which was awesome for me. What would you do differently?: Nothing, I was thrilled. Post race
Warm down: Regrettably, nothing! But I actually felt great immediately after crossing the finish line - I stood and talked to folks and waited for Mike to cross - did some hamstring stretches (touched my toes) and some quad stretches, but that was it. What limited your ability to perform faster: For once... NOTHING! :) Event comments: This is my best race effort to date. I loved this race. I felt great the whole way through, and felt like I truly gave it my all. I was psyched that the results showed that, I truly was not expecting them to. But when I crossed the finish line, for the first time ever, I felt I had done all that I could - absolutely no regrets. It was an awesome feeling. I've come a long way. Got a great night's sleep - best night's sleep before a race yet. Had no nerves really - having just done the 70.3 one week before and knowing I was training through this one, I had no pressure. 3 hours in the day before on swim and bike, I was feeling a little tired. But I'd also done my 1.5 hour bike on the course itself.
Morning of the race woke up at 7 (LATE for a Tri, nice having it in my own hometown), had a nice breakfast of oatmeal, banana and milk. Made it to transition and it was already really crowded, but still easily parked the car and walked to the transition area to get set up. Easy relaxed morning.
I got set up and went for a bike ride. I'd had to make a software update to my Garmin the day prior and so all of my settings were wrong - so my warmup basically consisted of calibrating the speed/cadence and power sensors. No spin ups or anything to get the heart really pumping, just spinning really. I'd also had my bike worked on, so I was making sure all was still well, my ride the day before had been in the pouring rain. Came back to transition to go for my run, but got called over to do pictures instead - so wound up that my bike was my only warmup.
