Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:00am then we left the house at 6:45am and before I left I had 1 banana and 2 shots of espresso with 1/2 cup skim milk.... About 15 minutes before the race I took a GU which was the 1st time I took it. Wanted to see if it would help or hurt, but really not sure..
Event warmup:

About 20 minutes before the race me and the wife went on a brisk walk to warm up and did some stretching.
Run
  • 35m 28s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 11m 24s  min/mile
Comments:

Just started training 12/24/10 and the most I have been up to without stopping was 2 miles. At the 2 mile marker which was at the bottom of the bridge I decided to walk to the top of the bridge and then run the rest of the way in. I walked about 3:37 minutes up the bridge and once at the top I ran the rest of the way to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Since It's still early into my training and I have not done more than 2 miles I would not change anything. Plan to race another 5K in 3 weeks and my goal is to complete the race without walking and beat my time today.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked until I could finally breathe.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing, new to racing, will do better with time...

Event comments:

Best part of the race was finishing and watching my wife finish 5 of 34 in her age group and seeing my son do the 1 mile fun run and finishing 3rd out of about 20 kids.. Now that was awesome and priceless...

Performance: Good

Course: Course was tough.. Started with the 1st 1.5 miles running with the wind at our backs which was blowing really hard and cold. About 3/4 mile we had to run up a nice size bridge which was really tough. Coming back on the last 1.5 we were running into the wind and it was like running still.
