Pre-race routine:

First triathlon. 90 minute goal. I had done some good work on my calf muscles about a month ago, and been in the process of recovering those. Took a short run on Tuesday before the race and decided it was survivable and wouldn't be too risky to actually do the race and run/walk if necessary...so was severely under-trained for the run.

Finding a hotel in Charleston with the Air Show and tennis event and who knows what else going on was a nightmare. Ended up in a dump in North Charleston that lost my reservation and hid me away in some trash room. The fire trucks were apparently very busy Friday night, as they came by at full code several times during the night, the last being at 3:30. I finally called it good and took my time getting ready. Put all my transition gear into one bag, filled bottles, and loaded everything back into the car. Some gatorade and trail mix on the way to the event.
Event warmup:

The sprint I had to make after setting up transition and getting the gut rumbles. Even with under 100 participants, the one toilet stall in the pool facility is NOT sufficient for the event. Left the site and hit the nearest gas station and made it back for short call to the pool.
Swim
  • 04m 34s
  • 250 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Once I hit the water, the tunnel vision set in. I was not expecting the focus that came with being 3 off the start, and it lasted the entire race, with the world only existing right in front of me. Pushed off, and dug in. Had to pass the person in front of me at the second wall, then another guy that started in front of me had an incident and inhaled some water, so passed him mid-lane on the third or fourth lane. Didn't really keep count until I saw I was in the last lane against the wall and just dug for the ladder. Felt VERY good in the water, and couldn't ask for a lot different. As I jogged to T1, I looked to check my time and realized I had forgotten to start my watch.
What would you do differently?:

Start my watch at the start, wear a top into the water, double check seed time earlier (before lockout)
Transition 1
  • 02m 58s
Comments:

Took my time here. Was a little freaked when I started up the Garmin to see my heartrate...pushed WAY too hard in the pool, or was taken by excitement? Sock trick of rolling them helped a LOT. Putting on a snug jersey when wet is an utter disaster, and counts for 30-45 seconds of transition.
What would you do differently?:

Wear a jersey into the water.
Bike
  • 42m 33s
  • 13 miles
  • 18.33 mile/hr
Comments:

Drivers were terrifying on this course. Soccer moms passing clumps of cars and cyclists in double yellow zones, disregarding oncoming riders (putting me in the grass twice). Police officers had cars stopped in right turn lanes at green lights and yelled at cyclists to just "go around"....they didn't seem to understand that putting the Ford Excursions BEHIND the cyclists (turning the same direction) was not helping at ALL. Some folks talked about a guy with a boat trailer that came damn close to taking out some riders near the turnaround. Wind was there, but not overbearing, pavement was worse than I expected for the type of neighborhood we were in.

Regardless, the volunteers were AMAZING. All the turns were marked, and clear directions (better than the cops were giving) were available at all traffic circles.

Felt REALLY good on the bike, but the heart rate would JUST NOT go DOWN. Slowed the pace a couple times, but just couldn't get it to drop, so just went with it and hammered. Could have averaged over 19, possibly 20, without trying to get it down.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out what happened with the HRM, and go by feel when things are clearly not right instead of sacrificing time. Pick a race/course that doesn't navigate the Soccer Mom Mecca.
Transition 2
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Slow again here. Need to pick up some of the fast lace deals.
What would you do differently?:

Fast cinch on running shoes, drink on the course instead of T2.
Run
  • 36m 40s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 11m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

Just put it in survival mode. Mile 1 was pretty rough, legs just didn't understand what I wanted them to do. Walked the aid at 1, drank some water, and paced back up. Legs got the hint, and just pushed through. "Sprinted" around the half-track finish. Coming down the chute was pretty dang cool, and it finally hit me that I was a friggin TRIATHLETE!
What would you do differently?:

Train for the run and not get injured a 6 weeks before the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Water intake, took in some fruit and liquid calories. Hung around for awards and to socialize for a bit. The 2 hour drive home allowed for some quiet rest time, solo processing, and fluids.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Getting injured 6 weeks ago. Was able to focus on the swim and the bike, and the numbers really showed up from that focus. Was VERY happy with the outcome, considering. I can clearly see that the run is my low-hanging fruit at this point, and given the leg continues to improve, can't wait for Clemson in a month!

Event comments:

SetUp Events put on a good, organized show. The local police and drivers left a LOT to be desired. The event needs more restrooms on site.
