Pre-race routine:

I feel pretty much obligated to do any triathlon within 3 miles of my house, even if that triathlon doesn’t include any sunshine. I knew I would have to work at 9 a.m. but I figured if I was in the first wave of the race I’d be able to get to work on time. So like a normal race we were up way to early to head to the race. We had the extra challenge of our 18 month old niece for the weekend. So it was up to me to wake her up at 5:30 and while she wasn’t a huge fan of getting up she was a pretty good trooper. Kelci’s got to practice packing a bag for a outing with a baby and seeing how much stuff she could cram into lylas bag.
Event warmup:

The doors at the Y opened at 6:30 and I walked it at 6:40 for a race start time of 7:00, so it took some hustle to get my transition set up with shoes and shirt and get my stationary bike seat height dialed in, and did a few laps around the track. Then I hurried up to throw my work clothes and bag in a locker, grabbed my GBHS Panther swim cap and goggles and ran down to the pool. Got in the water with 5 min to spare and did a 100 yards warm up and then it was go time.

Comments:

I was initially supposed to share the lane which meant I’d be hugging the wall for 500 yards. But at the last second my lane mate was able to switch over to the opposite side of the pool and we both ended up with our own lanes. They counted down from 10 and we were off. I swam the first 100 quite a bit too fast and had a few body lengths lead starting the 2nd hundred. I was wearing my tinted goggles and the water was kind of foggy to begin with, so I was only able to scope out the competition when I’d breathe. After 300 I was really starting to hurt but I had put a pretty ambitious estimated time down and I wanted to make a go for it, plus I knew there were a few sub 12 min 2 milers id be running against so I needed a cushion. Aside from a few sloppy flip turns the yards went by quick and I was soon jumping out of the pool
Transition 1

Bike
  • 18h 25m
  • 6 miles
  • 0.33 mile/hr
Comments:

Right out of the water you run up 3 flights of stairs to the pool, this didn’t help my already high heart rate. But I got up the stairs without any wet floor wet feet issues and pulled on my Zoots and hopped on the bike. I had about 30 seconds before all the rest of the racers started trickling in. Ive never spent any time on a Cybex indoor stationary bike so it was an adjustment to pick what gear I wanted to be in. I had pretty high rpms going but might not have been pushing a high enough gear. From glancing at my competitors I should have been much higher than the level 8 I was on. 17 min later and my 6 miles were done but I had fallen to 4th place.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 13h 29m
  • 2 miles
  • 6h 44m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

I was already 2 laps down on the leader and 1 lap down on the next 2 guys and they were moving. I went up the stairs with another broseph and once we hit the track he quickly set a pace I wasn’t going to match. My quads were yelling about the bike straight into more stairs but I tried to set a steady pace. It was 28 laps around the raised track and about halfway in I was passed again to put me into 6th, a few side cramps from my crazy high heart rate slowed me down a bit but at the end I ended up almost 6 laps back on the winner.
What would you do differently?:

do intervals and run at a fast pace more often. i havent done any sprint work since i'm training for the half mary
Post race
Event comments:

It was a pretty cool experience and definitely was out of the norm in the middle of training for a half marathon. But after a few min with Lyla and Kelci and then it was off to the shower and then time to head to the Y.
