![]() Swim
Comments: Got caught behind someone who wouldn't let me pass at the walls. This went on for 2-3 lengths. Finally put the hammer down and just passed her on the straight, but it took me a bit out of my stroke and breathing rythmn. Was able to recover for the last 50m. What would you do differently?: Seed myself a little higher (lower time) on the pool swim. With all due modesty, I think I had myself seeded accurately, but I think others around me were a bit optimistic. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: T1 seemed like it would never end. So many layers of clothing to fend off the elements. I was wet, all of my things were wet ... it was a struggle. And after all that, I took off without my gloves -- a critical error in these conditions. I quickly lost feeling in fingers and struggled handling my water bottle with numb, wet hands. What would you do differently?: Every layer of clothing I put on was 100% necessary due to conditions, so not sure what else I could have done other than practice putting them on wet?? Definitely won't forget my gloves again either :( ![]() Bike
Comments: Wasn't able to drink enough during the ride, due to previously mentioned lack of gloves. Got a cramp in my left calf during a climb in mile 8-9. Was able to work it out fairly quickly by dropping my heels, but did slow my pace a bit during a crucial stretch. Also hit a couple of patches of traffic that got bunched up around other cyclists -- slowed the pace significantly, but I used the opportunity to take on more water. What would you do differently?: Push harder throughout the bike portion. Drink plenty of fluids. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Felt fairly quick - almost like I was forgetting something quick. Looking back, I think it just felt so quick in comparison to T1. What would you do differently?: Not much. Felt pretty good. Snuck in some additional water and Shot Bloks, which I think really helped the run. ![]() Run
Comments: This was my best run in a tri so far. I'm finally getting fit enough in the other two disciplines that I have something left in the tank. Still not nearly as quick as I can run a straight 5K, but felt strong. What would you do differently?: Continue to push my limits on the run. May have another minute or two left to gain. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Light jog around the campus. Grabbed a little food and water from the hospitality tents. What limited your ability to perform faster: Weather was the biggest factor, as we knew heading into the race. I do think I need to be more aggressive when seeding myself in the swim -- I think that cost me 1:00 overall. Event comments: Lots of volunteers - I think they may have actually had it worse than us, because at least we were moving the whole time! They were definitely appreciated though. Ate oatmeal for breakfast. Had everything packed the night before. Wasn't sure exactly what to pack due to weather conditions, so basically packed every option I had.
Quick 50 yd swim in the pool to get oriented. Light jogging.
