Swim
Comments: Waited for over an hour in the water for the fog to lift. It would start to clear and the wind would shift and back it came. I never did ever see the turn buoy for the Oly Course. Race director had to make a decision and put us out on the sprint course. First time I ever did a time trial start. Interesting, but makes knowing where you rank on the course in your AG impossible to figure out. Ran into the water well, swam on feet the entire trip and sighted really well. I had a 23 to 25 min Oly swim in me today. Where was that at Knoxville? What would you do differently?: Nothing .... race director made the right call. I guess 2011 is going to be my year of funky swims ( 2 for 2 so far) Transition 1
Comments: Really big timing chips and they had to be outside of the wetsuit to read so naturally mine gets caught on the suit as it is coming off. Shoes on bike, great run out and mount and decent shoe entry after making 1st turn. John should be proud of this T1. 3rd fastest out of 71. What would you do differently?: Put my chip under my suit, but got yelled at 2 times for trying to get away with that before I left the line. Bike
Comments: Goal was to ride this route in "my Box" at 210 watts, with a hill cap of 300 watts. This turned out to be a tough pace to keep, but I was using this as a training race and kept telling myself to "Keep Calm and Carry On" and didn't answer any passes on the bike route. Came off the bike at 210 avg watts with a NP of 223, so I hit my numbers right on. Avg watts = 210 NP = 223 Avg Cad = 88 TSS = 114.9 IF = .979 What would you do differently?: Probably could have upped my number to 220 with a 350 hill cap and still been fine on the run. But I have to say it felt good to really execute on the bike with a plan. 1 - 2 scoop bottle of Heed and 1 scoop of SE. 1 complete refill of water on course. This will work perfect doubled for HIM. Stomach was great and never felt hungry. May need more electrolytes based on heat index. Transition 2
Comments: Came out of my shoes a little early based on the course but I don't think it cost me much. Still have to wear socks on the run .... still recovering from the blisters from my last "race" where I tried to go sock-less. Lots of grass in transition so it took a little to clean the feet. Sorry John, dropped to 12 out of 71 on this transition? If I wasn't a soft footed sock wussy, I would be faster? What would you do differently?: Not be a sock wimp to further earn Fatty's LUV. Run
Comments: Race was aimed to work on running off the bike. Very happy with this performance. Had a goal of setting the first lap at 8:20's and then see what I have left. After the first 2 miles, I felt very relaxed and very smooth and quit checking my watch for pace for the rest of the first lap. Started the second lap and picked up the pace a little until the turn around and then latched on to a younger runner when he passed me and drafted him all the way home. Only issue on the run was a rock in my shoe for the first mile and 1/2 that kept me thinking about Minnow's toe and I thought about stopping and getting it out of my shoe. It finally moved and wasn't an issue. One gel at Mile 4 before the first gear change. What would you do differently?: Maybe push a little bitter harder on the first lap, but I really wanted to execute on a plan and accomplished that goal. I will have to check, but I think this is a PR run time during an OLY. I know it is the first time I placed better overall in the run versus the bike. I think I feel good about that ????????????????? Post race
Warm down: Walked a little, stretched a little, ate a lot. The extra hour in the water before the swim could have been really tough on the nutrition plan. Thankful I decided that 1/2 of clif bar would be useful before the swim. Compression shorts for the drive home. The three hour drive was not good for the hips. What limited your ability to perform faster: Was conservative on my race wattages and paces. Could have been faster but I was right on my numbers. Event comments: New OLY PR? I guess that doesn't count with a shortened swim :) Great small race. Really fast AG again. Saw lots of Peeps I know from high school, etc. Will go back to do this one again. Race Director made the right decision with the swim change. Tough call, but the right one. Hurt my overall placing .... but still the right call. Last updated: 2011-02-22 12:00 AM

Went up on Friday night. Got up early on Saturday morning and did a Recon Ride with Ben (chasingkona). Spent all day Saturday working with Mom on house chores, church, dinner, then bed.
Up early on Sunday Morning, ate a bananna, glass of choc milk, cup of Joe and drove out to West Salem and rode from the parking lot to the race start. Checked in, got marked up, got set up transition.
Went for a mile or so jog around down the start of the run course, and put on the wetsuit, ate 1/2 a clif bar, and off to the pre-race meeting. Swam a couple of out and backs to make sure suit was wet and arms were good and stayed in the water (it was F'in cold outside of the water) and waited for the fog to lift.
