Pre-race routine:

Got into NYC the day before the race and had too much to do. Kids were way too excited and I got all of about 3 hours sleep. Up at 3:15. I had a kind bar, banana, sports drink and a caffeinated gel.
Event warmup:

Mile and a quarter walk from transition to swim start and stretching.
Swim
  • 18m 50s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 09s / 100 yards
Comments:

I need to get a heart rate monitor that's waterproof. I had no idea my exertion was as high as it was. I really felt in control but getting out of the water I knew that wasn't the case.
What would you do differently?:

Swim a bit slower and know my heart rate.
Transition 1
  • 07m 48s
Comments:

Transition included a 750 yard barefoot run from the water exit. There were park benched right outside of transition and I took advantage of using them to finish getting the wetsuit off. Also it had been pouring out all morning so my stuff was in bags. Really I don't think I could have done this much faster given everything.
What would you do differently?:

It was hot running in the wetsuit. I think I would take it completely off after clearing the dock.
Bike
  • 1h 24m 25s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.66 mile/hr
Comments:

There are two transition areas and with mime the bike and T1 are a half mile longer than the other. Also going in and out of Riverside with the really wet conditions you had to go slow. My actual pace on the West Side Highway was 18.6. The half mile in and out brought me down. It was still the right decision to be so cautious as the conditions did warrant it and even dry those areas are tight.
What would you do differently?:

The big hill I probably should have gone into my small ring.
Transition 2
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

Given all my stuff was still in bags due to the rain I smoked this transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 1h 02m 49s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

The first mile had one short but very steep hill coming out of transition but was then flat. I did an 8:48 mile and still felt great. Mile two was very hilly and I did 9:23 with the same heart rate and exertion level. Right at mile two when my Garmin chirped the clouds cleared and the sun came out. The temp skyrocketed from the low 80's to 90's over the next mile. The humidity the entire race was oppressive but now it was like a steam bath. Mile 3 I still did a 9:54 mile but the wheels were coming off.

Mile 3.4 to 4 was a huge hill. I made it to the top but I was now cramping in my abdomen and worse my quads were seizing. I alternated walking and jogging the rest of the way trying to control the cramping and my overheating. I did manage to run the last half mile by all the spectators and family.

Two other people who finished seconds ahead of me both went to the medical tent. I came really close to going myself. I sat for 15 minutes pouring cold water over my head and felt better but still drained.
What would you do differently?:

The humidity and heat took their toll and going out to fast on the swim albeit unknowingly caught up to me.
Post race
Warm down:

Cold towel, ice, water over the head.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat and too fast of a swim.

Event comments:

They started the race a half hour late due to an accident on the West Side Highway that needed to be cleaned up but the communication and organization was superb especially when you consider this was in NYC>

Performance: Good
Suit: 2XU westsuit
Course: By far the highest chop I've ever swam in. A few times I felt like I was in free fall coming off the waves. My pace felt good and I felt in control. It was a time trial start with 20 people at a time. I passed a couple hundred people in red swim caps, my color, then passed a lot of gray ones, then a lot of green ones, then yellow and then orange. People were having a really hard time with the chop. I've never seen so much breast and back stroke in an event. I got to the dock and as they assisted me out of the water I knew I had exerted myself much more than I had thought fighting through the chop. My time was much faster than it should have been.

Course: The course was awesome. More total ascents than either of my other two Olympics this season but there was only one huge hill. The rest of the race you were either climbing or descending but it was all moderate. The way back the headwind was really strong especially on the bridges.
