Swim
Comments: When the swim started my friend, Brian, and I started as the last two racers in our wave. We wanted to be sure everyone we passed was actually behind us instead of worrying if they had passed us in the swim. I got aggressive in the swim. I was pushing it hard and getting by a lot of people. I would see somebody during one sight and be past them on the next. I came out of the water in under eight minutes, off to a great start. What would you do differently?: Seed close to people I can draft off of. Also, learn to draft. Transition 1
Comments: Transition was a little bit of a problem. I rushed myself a little and didn’t get the wetsuit all the way down and struggled with it for a little bit. I got my bike and set off though. Somehow I still got top 10 T1. What would you do differently?: Focus! Bike
Comments: The bike felt good. It didn’t feel great like the swim. I felt like I didn’t rest my legs enough to push it hard like I wanted to. I made my way up the pack, passing the waves in front of me with good speed. I tried to take the hills light and in a low gear, saving my legs for the run. The wind was pretty much nonexistent for the bike which made for a simpler course. What would you do differently?: Work hard and then rest more. Need to have fresher legs. Transition 2
Comments: I got in transition again and struggled with my shoes. Focus was definitely off in both transitions and it probably cost me a few seconds in the long run. I fumbled around, got my shoes on and went for the run. What would you do differently?: Focus! Run
Comments: This was the first race I did ‘blind.’ I didn’t wear my watch so I wasn’t sure what my speed was during the run. I started off and told myself it was going to be tough, my legs felt tired and not up to what they were a few weeks ago. I settled into a good pace and started to work my way up to other racers. Once I neared the turnaround I started to get my motivation back. Waiting was not an option anymore and I started to work harder to finish strong. With a little ways left I started to cramp up on my side while everyone kept cheering me to the finish, telling me to push harder when all I wanted to do was walk. What would you do differently?: Run felt good, just needed to do a few more brick workouts. Post race
Warm down: I crossed the finish line and could hardly stand up. My side was aching and I wanted it to go away. I made my way to the food tent and had a cup of Heed which helped out a lot so I had another. Checking with the results it turned out that I got 2nd in my age group out of 22 people. The guy who got first got bumped up to the overall placing so I was able to finally win my age group for the first time! What limited your ability to perform faster: Taper more. Event comments: Pigman does a great job each time I come! Last updated: 2011-02-24 12:00 AM

Heading into the race I didn’t feel as focused as I typically am. Usually I have a mindset that I’m racing during the week and my whole thought process and preparing for the race. It wasn’t until the night before that I really started realizing I was racing.
I got to transition before it opened and the place was packed already. I was able to get a decent spot and get a few warm-ups in for the bike and run. The bike was my largest concern for the race since I had been teaching spin classes almost every day for the last week and hadn’t gotten outside on the bike much.
