Pre-race routine:

Not much to it. Got up early, didn't eat much - just a harvest bar and had another cereal bar about an hour befor the race. I drank a bottle of water before the race. I also shot a GU just before the swim.
Event warmup:

Not much at all. I really should have swam some laps to get the blood flowing and get my arms warmed up. Also, maybe jog just a little.
Swim
  • 06m 4s
  • 300 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

Things got pretty backed up due to the snake style of it. I could have had a faster time.
What would you do differently?:

Warmed up - for sure.

I should have worn a swim cap. If nothing else - so i don't have all that water/sweat coming down into my eyes on the bike.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Went pretty good. I now think the tri suits are worth the money. However, unless you are worried about seconds (I'm not) I think it is
best to relax, catch your breath, and have a smooth transition
What would you do differently?:

Well, for starters - i only put one water bottle on my bike. Also, i didn't clean my feet good enough and i had little rocks bothering me the rest of the race. I need to learn how to mount the bike with my shoes already locked in.
Bike
  • 58m 51s

  • 14.27 mile/hr
Comments:

I HAD A FLAT!!! I was doing pretty good until then. It took me about 15 minutes to get back on the bike. Then, once I got going again I felt like I had to ride like hell to catch up. Therefore, once I got to the run - my legs were DEAD.
What would you do differently?:

Need to learn how to change a flat faster. Need more water. The GU and carb cubes worked good. Also, need to ride in the aero position a lot more (especially into head winds).
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Pretty fast for my first T2. Those bungy laces are great.
What would you do differently?:

From now on I will put my hat in my small ice chest. I will not change shirts. I might also consider wearing a fuel belt with cold water. My body temp was pretty high by that time - so I could have used the ice water to spray on my head.
Run
  • 33m 4s
  • 3 miles
  • 11m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

My calves cramped like a Mo Fo the first mile. I kept having to stop and stretch them out. I felt like I had a serious fever throughout the run.
What would you do differently?:

Have legs in better condition. Probably carry a cold water bottle with me to cool off.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much and should have done more. I did stretch for about 5 minutes and walked for about 10-15. I was freaking exhausted by that time.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Over weight. Not enough training. Didn't take my diet serious enough. Beer the night before and not enough sleep. Flat tire and cramps.

Event comments:

This was my first Triathlon and I was very proud of my efforts.
