Pre-race routine:

Arrived a bit later than I usually would and had to rush through picking up race packet, transition prep and getting dressed for race, but managed to hit beach with 5 mins to spare.
Event warmup:

Hopped into the water to get the shock over with, pretty chilly but not too bad.
Swim
  • 21m 56s
  • 966 meters
  • 02m 16s / 100 meters
Comments:

First OWS of year, have not swum much due to lack of training time so I got through it. Had a very rough patch breathing about half way through but recovered.
What would you do differently?:

Not swim like a stone!
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

No transition time logged by organizers, but felt fine to me.
Bike
  • 1h 01m 56s
  • 16.5 miles
  • 15.98 mile/hr
Comments:

The course was hilly, and pretty windy, but even taking this into account this bike segment was below average for me. I could not catch my breath, legs could not transmit any power to pedals and in general felt fatigued. Note to self. Don't do a 90 min hill workout on the Thursday before a race. I think that might have been a factor. That said I really enjoyed the course, very picturesque farmland in Clinton NJ and nice support from locals in the area.
What would you do differently?:

Rest the legs before a race if I want to ride faster.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

No T2 timing but felt I got in and out pretty smoothly.
Run
  • 23m 21s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 07m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt pretty good on the run considering limited training time. Held on to the shoulder of a guy who passed me about half way and paced off him then had the legs to kick on in last .75 mile which felt good.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. After the bike I expected to run 9's as my legs had been so dead, so to average 7:30's was just fine by me.
Post race
Warm down:

Water + gatorade + sit down + socialize with the GC Tri crew.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Legs were heavy and felt fatigued.

Event comments:

This was a great location and race, the only down side was the organization at turns directing riders which was patchy. I managed to make the turns but I was not going very fast, and I saw a few people go the wrong way. That said, I would definitely recommend and do this race again though, great location and conditions for a season opening race. After 7 days of straight rain the sun finally came out and conditions were close to perfect.
