Pre-race routine:

The race had a 1:00 PM start time, so I was able to sleep in a bit and we left the house around 10:15, getting to the packet pick-up around 11:30.
Event warmup:

Did a 2.85 mile warm-up, including about 3-4 minutes at race pace. Got to the starting line around 10 minutes before race start.

  • 39m 35s
  • 6.21 miles

Comments:

I have only been back running for five weeks after taking two months off for an achilles injury, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. If I had kept my base, I would have probably been in the high 37 minute range.

My goal was to be around 39 minutes, but the headwind along the water ruined this plan. Other than the two miles along the water (6:33 and 6:39 pace) I was pretty much at or below my goal pace of 6:15.

I was hoping to have some people to draft off into the headwind, but I was separated from any groups when I got to that point. My HR stayed at the same level (around 180), but I just couldn't keep the pace into what was probably close to a 20 mph wind.

Without the wind I imagine I would have been right around the 39 minute mark. At the start I was talking with a guy who mentioned about another windy day about twenty years ago where he ran a 31:30 - he ended up around 35:00 today, and he's 55!

I'm starting my marathon plan shortly for a race in early September, so my mileage will start creeping up. My next running race is a half marathon at the end of May, and I'm hoping to be around 1:24-1:25 after two more solid months of running.

I did this race last year just as I was starting to get into training for triathlons after sitting on my butt for several years. I beat last year's time by over 8 minutes, but I was at least 20 lbs heavier then and only had minimal running under my belt.
What would you do differently?:

Not get injured back in December!!! But I learned from that injury and have changed my stride a bit. It was a lot better to have an injury in the off-season, so I look at as a positive thing I can build on.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around near the finish while I waited for Katie to finish. She was aiming to go under 50:00, but was a little over 51:00. She was a bit disappointed, but the wind had an effect on everyone.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Only being able to build up a base over the last five weeks and that crazy wind.

Event comments:

I'm looking to build on this race as the season gets under way. My first tri is in five weeks, and I'm looking to go into that race nice and strong. I can gain a lot on the run this season as I'll be logging lots of miles in prep for an early fall marathon.

Course: Course was relatively flat, but at the same time deceptively hilly, and there was a strong wind today. About two miles of the course runs right by the ocean, and there was a very strong head wind. Another 1.5 miles is on some small rolling hills, then the last bit is pretty flat to the finish.
