Pre-race routine:

Only my second multisport race - got there nice and early although I had a little trouble finding the park. Standard breakfast, potty break, setup transition, stood around talking to people and just relaxed. No swimming today so I was a happy camper.
Event warmup:

Ran the first half mile of the course to get a feel for the trail - nice easy pace. This was my first official race since I have converted 100% to minimalist shoes. Using my Merrill Trail Gloves today.

Comments:

Went out fast - feeling good in the Merrill's - tried to stay with the front third of the pack. Had to ease up a little at the turnaround as I'm still building endurance with the shoes and my right calf was complaining a little.
What would you do differently?:

Probably would have set myself for around 9 min/mile pace to start - just to be smart.
Transition 1
  • 01m 25s
Comments:

I always seem to take my time in transition - I really need to develop a sense of urgency...
What would you do differently?:

Speed it up buddy! I was ranked 104 of 127 in T1.

Comments:

My first race with aerobars - I have the type that you add to a road bike, so no shifters. I've only used them 3 or 4 times - maybe 40 miles tops. I was a little nervous at first but then quickly got comfortable in them. It's get tiring getting up and down in them - so many little hills and so much shifting - I'll have to think about changing my setup if I continue to use them.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe push it a little harder - my calf was still talking to me during the ride and I wanted to be sure to finish in a decent time so I was resting up a bit, especially near the end of the ride.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Again - get moving - why am I taking my time? I had to tie my Merrill's - that took a few seconds. A little drink of my water bottle, looking around to see how many bikes are back - hey - wake up! Time to run...

Comments:

Legs were tired - calf was not happy - just decided to go for a little run - no real rush. Kept it under 10 min miles. It's a little tough when you see the people already coming back from the turn-around - people you know passed you on the bike, but that's okay - it's all fun.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - just need to build up some more speed in the "barefoot" shoes.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, potty break - hey, is that Pizza? Cool - Papa John's - what I call "rubber pizza" - if it's so bad, why did I just scarf down 3 pieces? Hmmmm....

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My decision last week to cutover permanently to minimalist. I've been having lots of knee pain in my traditional running shoes - no more pain since using Terra Plana Evo's (road) and Merrill Trail Gloves (Trail), but I'm not quite up to my full endurance yet in them.

Event comments:

I love to race - love the Duathlon format - not a big fan of the swim but I'm slowly coming around. I was actually sad when it was over - I would do it again tomorrow if I could!

Course: 1 mile out and back - probably 1/3 through some woods, 1/3 across the dam and then back into the woods again. More of a horse trail - not single track, but lots of roots and rocks. They had just laid down some fresh sand in some areas but didn't flatten it out - it was like having little speed bumps. Overall, a fine trail to run - I love running in the woods, so anytime out there is good with me!
