Pre-race routine:

Totally underprepared for this race. I headed into this season feeling very good. Had built up a solid 120 mi/month run base and was working hard on the bike. In week 2 of my training plan I had a freak accident on the bike that left me with a bone bruise underneath my kneecap. I was unable to run or bike at all for about 10 weeks, and then had to do low intensity bike or 1min run / 1min walk intervals for much of the rest leading up to race day. It was only in the last 3 weeks leading up to the race that I could walk down stairs w/o any pain at all. Still given all that, I was able to get my training time back up to the ranges I thought they needed to be in (3+ hr bikes, 2+ hr run/walks) to finish. So I decided to keep the race on the calendar and just see how it went.
Event warmup:

I'm terrible at this. Does BS'ing and cracking jokes w/ the people in my transition rack count as a warm up?
Swim
  • 40m 57s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

I had a great swim (for me) took it very easy on purpose as given my (lack of) training this year I wasn't sure how the day was going to go. Still managed to pass plenty of people. I believe I finished this swim in less time than my Oly swim the year before, and was WAY fresher coming out of the water. During my injury I spent a lot of time working on the swim and it seemed to pay off. Wish I could draft better. Lots of opportunity with the clear water
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 04m 30s
Comments:

Slow T1 - rusty (haven't done one since last year) also I always make sure to take time out and say hi to the family if they are there. So that maybe cost me 1 minute.
What would you do differently?:

organize a bit better
Bike
  • 3h 50m 15s
  • 56 miles
  • 14.59 mile/hr
Comments:

God, pathetic. But somewhat on purpose as well. Wasn't sure how my knee was going to hold up. It was a hilly course, but I can't blame much of this on the hills. I kept this to an easy Z2 workout the entire time. I was talking to some of my BOP members all the way up the long hills both heading out of Chelan and coming back in over Navarre-Coulee (sp?).
What would you do differently?:

Still working on the nutrition piece. I felt fine energy wise, so I assume the calorie count is ok. But starting around the Navarre hill I started feeling sloshy and somewhat bloated. Figured I was drinking too much liquid so dialed that back somewhat. That helped with the sloshy feeling, but for some reason my stomach still never recovered. Still felt bloated and got somewhat worse later - Perhaps it's the protein in the Infinit. I remember reading somewhere that that could be a source of stomach problems
Transition 2
  • 02m 52s
Comments:

Eh, ok transition. Made small stupid mistakes, again because I was rusty. Stupid'est mistake? Heading back towards the bike exit and not realizing that's not the run exit until I was nearly there. Really stupid since I specifically made sure the night before I knew where the run exit was.
What would you do differently?:

Not head towards the bike exit...
Run
  • 2h 14m
  • 13.17 miles
  • 10m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

Hum... Good and bad. Happy with the run considering all else. Felt just fine starting the run. Out through about mile 6 things were going pretty decently. But I just could not get myself to drink anything after about mile 3. Even though the sloshy feeling from the bike was gone, my body made it clear that drinking is not a great idea. Just couldn't stomach anything. Water, Gatoraide, Hammer - nothing. Did my best to take a drink or two from each cup I grabbed, but I passed many an aid station w/o taking anything. My overall nutrition seemed ok though. Lucky I have a fairly iron stomach when it comes to food. I had a few hammer gels which I've never tried before. I hate the consistency of every gel i've ever tried and these were no better. I downed 4 of them (3 mtn berries and 1 um Chocolate I think) gross, but they worked. I also carried 1 Ciffs Shot Bloks with me (margarita flavor) which I ate at teh very beginning. Much better. I may try to use those exclusively in the next race.

My original plan was to walk (30 seconds) every 0.6 miles and/or every aid station - which ever seemed more conveinent. I was totally paranoid about this run given my slow knee recovery. This worked out wonderfully. In fact, I skipped several intervals just because the knee felt so strong. The knee felt just fine the day after, so I can reasonably say it's back to normal. Just a short 18 weeks since I injured it

Miles 9-13 were sort of a death march. I'd like to blame the lack of drinking anything, but I may have just out run my run fitness here.

What would you do differently?:

Fix my hydration
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Experience and training. Hoping to fix small mistakes by Lake Stevens and hoping to be in beter cardio shape by Black Diamond in Sept.

This was my first HIM and first time at Chelanman so I totalled PR'd this one!

Event comments:

I thought this race was fantastic. Great support, great course. It's hilly, but I like the challenge. The scenery is fantastic and the post race event was well done. Cudos to the RD.
