Swim
Comments: This was a reverse tri - so, this was the final leg. Everything went smooth. I was able to pass freely with one exception where I was part of a group of four or five that hit the wall at the same time. There was a bit of confusion there - but, it didn't hold me up significantly. I did have a new tri shirt on that I swear felt like it was adding a lot of drag - but, it may have just been me being tired. I'll have to check it out during training sometime. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 1
Comments: This one was Run to Bike. All went well with one very minor exception: I forgot to put on my helmet before I took off running with my bike. I did notice it there (on my aero bars) after a few steps and put it on. So, no real impact to my transition. This was my second race with leaving my shoes on the bike pedals - it worked out great. What would you do differently?: Put my helmet on right away! Bike
Comments: Here, I was hoping for about 22 mph avg (using my Garmin) - but, my Garmin was still useless. So, based on RPE, I gave it a go. I got passed (like I was standing still) by one guy in my AG. No need to chase, I didn't have a prayer keeping up with him. A little later I came up on another guy in my AG. I passed him and shortly after that, he passed me back. After he passed, he was keeping a better pace - so, I just kept on him (being careful to stay out of his draft zone). However, once we hit the rollers, he was no longer keeping a pace I was happy with - so, I passed again. This time it stuck. I love the end of this bike course. Once you come out of the rollers, it's nice a fast to the finish! What would you do differently?: It would be nice to have my Garmin working! Transition 2
Comments: This one was Bike to Swim. Again, all went well with one very minor exception: I forgot to take off my sunglasses. Again, this posed no real impact to my transition time. What would you do differently?: Remove my sunglasses at my bike! Run
Comments: I had a plan to pace at or below 7 min/mile using my Garmin. However, for the second race in a row, my Garmin had some serious operator error issues. This time I had the race order set at S-B-R from the Oly I raced the week before. So, when I looked down to check my pace and saw "OTHER", I knew I had screwed up. I made a half-assed attempt to get it worked out while running but was unsuccessful. So, I just went on RPE - which apparently worked out just fine. What would you do differently?: I need to get my Garmin Multi-Sport operation figured out. Post race
Warm down: Not much. Drank some water and cheered on any friends that were still racing. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing - for the time spent training, I was repaid. Event comments: A great race: well organized, very fast, and competitive. Last updated: 2011-03-08 12:00 AM

Up at 4:30 am. Took a quick shower to wake up and then drank a cup of coffee and ate a bowl of "Loaded Yogurt" (Chobani + 1/2 Rolled Oats + 1 Scoop of Protein Power). After that, I packed up the truck and headed out. The race is on Kirtland AFB and usually gate access is a nightmare. However, this morning everything went smooth and I arrived to rack my bike early enough to get a choice spot. I set up my transition area and then milled around talking to friends that were also racing. Ate a GU 15 minutes before race time.
3/4 mile running around the track that is next to the transition area: 1.5 laps easy and 1.5 laps of increasing pace in the straights while floating the turns.
