Swim
Comments: It was a pretty decent swim. I still need to work on picking a course and sticking with it instead of zig-zapping all over. I got caught behind a couple of slower swimmers a few times and took too much time figuring out how to go around and/or swung way too wide so I wouldn't kick them. What would you do differently?: Just keep working on swim strategy. Transition 1
Comments: Not sure why it took me 4 minutes. It was a longer run from the timing mat into transition and it was up hill. I didn't run very fast. I got the shoes on pretty quickly. What would you do differently?: Not sure. I guess run a little quicker Bike
Comments: Lot of tough hills but I started out kicking A$S! I was biking hard and doing my best... So here is when things starting going bad. It wasn't so much of a crash as a slow motion tip over. I was heading up a tough hill and just completely lost steam. The good news is that I was ok. The bad news is my bike was not (as I found out a minute later). After the fall I walked to the top of the hill and attempted to get going again. I clipped in, pushed off and...over I went again. My front wheel locked up. Either the brake was bent or the rim was bent and so was my gear shifter thingy. And this time I racked one of my wrists when I fell too. Someone offered to get the race support people but I said I was going to try and finish the race. So, I walked my bike a couple of miles into transition and then went into the run. Luckily, the EMS truck was right next to the run out chute so I had them toss me an ice pack on my way by so I could ice my wrist a bit while running. What would you do differently?: Not fall! Oh, and maybe train on more hills. I also need to work on hydration. I can't reach my water bottle easily enough and I didn't want to slow down to try and drink so I didn't get enough water. May have contributed to my fall. Transition 2
Comments: Wow! I can't believe I got through the transition in 2:25. I limped into transition after pushing/pulling a dead bike with a hurt wrist and somehow I was able to get my hat, shoes and race belt on and keep going. What would you do differently?: Hey, I'll take it! If I can get T2 done in 2:25 under those conditions, I can definitely do it in less then 1:30 next time. Run
Comments: So, I was thinking that the bike crash blew my race and I just messed around on the run way too much. I was hurting from the fall (my wrist, my hip, my leg) so I just jogged a bit, stopped to talk to the people at the water stops and encouraged other runners. I wasn't even out of breath at the finish. I was just frustrated about the crash and figured it didn't matter how I ran. What would you do differently?: Regardless of what happens in the swim and bike I need to do my best on the run. If I would have ran my normal pace I could have still ended up in the middle of the pack! I had no idea. I figured with all the time I wasted dragging my bike in the last part of the bike course, there was no way I could still do a decent time. I was wrong. Post race
Warm down: Went to the EMS truck and had them check out my wrist. They wrapped and iced it and told me to go to the hospital. What limited your ability to perform faster: Uhhhh...the bike crash? Event comments: It was a really good race for someone who has trained on hills. The swim seemed longer then 100 meters but the water was decent. The run was fabulous. Well, the day started out good. I got up on time. I was able to actually eat a little breakfast and I felt good.
Biked around a little.
