Swim
Comments: Had the same problem.....Started like I was fired out of a cannon and went out too fast. I really need to heed my own advice and slow the hell down !! Also, doing the first 100 like I do when warming up (hypoxic 4-5 stroke breathing) is not recommended. Like I said before, I was on autopilot and this was a good example of it. Had I not done that, I think I am in the 4:20 or below range.... What would you do differently?: Drink a cup of coffee to get the proper caffine intake PRIOR to swimming. This shold help me be more attentive to my own advice :)....Honestly, just need to pace myself in the first 100m, no matter the distance and negative split the rest. Transition 1
Comments: I did more of a kick in the pool than I normally do. My legs felt a little like Jello running to transition. I am also only guessing at the time as I did hit the lap button on my Garmin and then switched over to bike while in T1. It really did seem like it was faster than previous T1's What would you do differently?: Get the helmet on first, then do the rest....Also need to start practicing my transitions (and a possible flying bike mount). I think that will keep these down to a minimum time. Bike
Comments: Man this was not what I expected and my average speed shows it....My Garmin says a whole different avg. speed but I think that this has my T1/T2 added to it. The out portion of this bike was some crazy hills for which I almost ran out of gears for. All in all once I got use to the fact that the hills were not going to disappear, I just settled in and went as fast as I could going downhill and grinded as hard as I could going up. This is definately a course I need to do once in a while to keep in hill shape for next year. But all in all was pretty damn good. Oh and blew a flat back tire about 100yrds from the dismount line into T2....I only mention that as I thought it was someone behind me, I took a look and no one was there, then noticed I was slowing down fast. Had to get out of the seat and grind to the line....First flat in 2 years. At least it happened very close to T2 that it was no big deal What would you do differently?: Much more work with hill repeats and just overall climbing skills. I had worked on this a little bit but need to spend more time on gearing, coming out of the saddle more and just more bike hanlding skill work. Transition 2
Comments: This one seemed really fast. Again this is just a guess but I had the bike shoes off, shoes on, race number in hand and head band in hand and ran like hell out of T2. What would you do differently?: Not chat and just get the hell out....One of the guys at my rack who started much sooner than me started talking to me and I started to while I was doing the above. Slightly distracting but just need to keep my focus..I can be friendly after the race Run
Comments: Started out slow as my legs really were like Jello (had to walk for a second off the bike into T2). Pace was too slow but had some hills righ off the bat. I had acutally worked on this part in training for this race and had been running hills on a regular basis. I can honestly say this helped alot !!! I knew what pace I could keep on the run up and where I needed to stay on the downhills. All in all, this was a pretty good run for the amount of hills. What would you do differently?: Keep working on hills.....My run is starting to become stronger and my endurance is getting better. I really do NOT like running but am starting to see the hard work pay off in races. Post race
Warm down: Crossed the finish, grabbed some water....Tried to catch my breath and just walked around for a few minutes to keep loose. There was a raffel afterwords so I stuck around for my chance and to see if I might have made the podium...I didn't get it this time but have some serious motivation for the next race (and this one again next year) to get on that damn podium. What limited your ability to perform faster: I still think transitions are a big issue.....I need to work on flying bike mounts from T1, jump off the bike and run into T2 and my run out of T2. This comes with practice and now see where I could have saved some time. Event comments: This was on par with any Ultramaxx race....Very well organized and very well managed. Swim started on time and they kept everyone going timely. The course was well marked and had someone at ever intersection on the bike and run. Definately a race I will do again next year and woudl recommend to anyone looking for a good challange !! Last updated: 2011-03-10 12:00 AM

Woke up at 0400a and had some oatmeal, energy bar, Kashi Cereal and some Green tea (needed the caffine !!). Stretched a little and packed the car to head out by 0500a. Have tried to keep everything the same each race and has worked out well....Especially since I am a complete Zombie at 0400a and I can be on autopilot the whole time.
Did some quick interval running but did not have the chance to get into the pool. Also did some streching and that was about it....
