Pre-race routine:

Got up early, packed up, headed out got coffee and breakfast sandwich then headed to the start.
Event warmup:

Umm...I put on my wetsuit, then walked down to the ferry with everyone participating. That counts as a warm-up, right?
Swim
  • 46m 44s
  • 2640 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

The ride out on the ferry was pretty cool, went out on the left side of the island and circled around the back to the right side. Once stopped we jumped off the ferry and lined up. I was near the end getting off so shortly after getting to the start the ferry horn blasted and we were off.

The water felt pretty good, did feel as cold as previous bay swims, pretty low rolling waves. I kept drifting to the left at the start, after I got into a rhythm I swam pretty straight. As we got closer to shore it got a bit choppy, probably calm by bay standards, though new for me. Stopped a couple of times to look back towards Alcatraz to enjoy where I was swimming from.

Made the entrance to the Aquatic park, so I was happy about that. This was probably the most excited I have ever been exiting a swim. Then off to transition for run number 1.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Took my time here, dried off a bit, got everything stuffed in the bag and then off on to the run., the second transition after the first was plenty slow, first stopped to pee. Then saw the wife and kid coming across the field a went slow so they could get there before leaving on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe try to go a bit faster
Bike
  • 57m 46s
  • 13 miles
  • 13.50 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike course was fun, though I really need to work on my climbing. Lack of hill climbing training was my largest limiting factor.
What would you do differently?:

Try to ride hills a bit more often.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Coming into transition from the bike, one foot didn't want to come out the pedals and nearly caused an accident with a guy right behind me.
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice the transitions, this would be huge time saver in the future. Between transitions 1, 2 and 3 nearly there was nearly 12 minutes. If I get them down to 1 minutes or less I would have ranked 5 places higher. That's a big jump without having to swim, bike, or run harder. Huge amount of time to make up here.
Run
  • 1h 24m 55s
  • 7.2 miles
  • 11m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Great runs, very scenic. I may not have gone very fast on either one, but thoroughly enjoyed the chance to run in a great area. After the turn around on Baker Beach had a great view of the Golden Gate and the ocean.

In the posted times, it appears that the transition 1 time is included in the run 1 time. Run1: 46:44, Run 2: 36:39
What would you do differently?:

Run faster
Post race
Warm down:

Drank some water, stretched, ate some food. Packed up and headed home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of consistent training prior to the event. Also a lack of riding hills definitely made the ride a whole lot slower then it needed to be.

Event comments:

Great Race! There were lots of great volunteers offering encouragement and to point you in the right direction. Lots of Kayaks to help make sure everyone made it in on the swim. There were aid stations at each transition and in the middle of each run. Great atmosphere at the race, everything was relaxed and very friendly.

Envirosports put on a great race. I would do this event again and wouldn't hesitate about signing up for their other events.

Course: The bike was switched back the the 2010 course due to construction on the Golden Gate Bridge bike path. The course was a four lap course in the Presidio, each lap about 3.25 miles. Starts with a fun downhill, then a turn around and right back up. Overall a fun challenging course with some fun downs and some not as fun climbs.

Course: There are two runs in this race, the first is a four mile run from the swim to the bike transition. Overall this run is quite flat going along the coast, the last portion has a bit climbing up to the bike transition. The second run is after the bike, it includes running down to Baker beach, then running on the beach for aprox a quarter mile to the turn around, then back down the beach to the infamous sand ladder. Going up this was a challenge, I walked it, at this point the legs just didn't have it to run. Once up the sand ladder you continue running up to the finish.
