Pre-race routine:

Arrived at race sight at 6:30am picked up race packet. The race director had sent an email stating rack your bike according to bib #, well not the case. The bike racks were very close together. I picked a spot and started setting up. I wasn't very happy knowing I would have to lift my bike over two other bikes just to get it out so I looked around and found a much better spot. Now I'm happy and set up.
Event warmup:

I hit the bathroom and went up to the track where the race finishes. Did a mile run moderate pace with a few pickups and that was it. Went back to transition took off shoes and did final set up.
Swim
  • 06m 39s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

I thought my swim should have been better. I'm sure it's due to not warming up in the water. Went into the water 8th came out 7th but I did loose some time to the fish out there.
What would you do differently?:

Should have warmed up with some laps, just did not have time
Transition 1
  • 00m 59s
What would you do differently?:

The fastest T1 was 54 seconds so I was right there
Bike
  • 37m 24s
  • 14 miles
  • 22.46 mile/hr
Comments:

Once I was done fighting my shoes I started bearing down on my first of six. I caught him after the first mile then number five. She was on a mountain bike. Then I caught two more at the hill going into the canyon. At this point I knew there was two people in front of me. I caught one before the first turn around. Then I saw the lead rider, he had already made the turn. I was about one minute behind him. I made my turn and hammered the down hill. It didn't take long to catch him. I started doing math the best I could and figured I was leading. I knew I was a much stronger rider that the first six and I wanted to open up as big a lead as I could so I hammered on. The next out and back turn around I had put about a minute and a half lead on the guy behind me. all went well back into town mostly up hill to flat. As I was approaching transition, I heard Gina yell, here comes the first rider, then I heard Joyce say why is he on Gary's bike?? (I made that up)
What would you do differently?:

I crushed the bike portion. This is where the race was won. All the hill work really paid off.
Transition 2
  • 00m 36s
Comments:

good transition legs felt great.
What would you do differently?:

One kid had a 19 second T2
Run
  • 20m 11s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

My legs felt great as I headed out. I started up the hill and I knew there was a right turn but not sure where. There was a few volunteers standing on the opposite corner so I yelled where is the turn? they pointed up the hill then a second later they said right there. Thanks guys. This again was up hill to a turn around. On the way back down I saw the second runner he was two min back. I gave him a "Good Job" and kept on, Back up the hill, around the block and down the hill I went. I skipped all but one water stations. Through the parking lot and up to the track. No one was even close as I made my way around the track I was thinking I might win this thing. You just don't know with a time trial start. So I crossed the finish line, forgot to have my arms in the air(damit)
What would you do differently?:

I have not been training hills this year but this was a good 5k pace for me
Post race
Warm down:

So people started congratulating me for the win, I had to tell them you don't know till all the racers are in. Talked to a couple of racers afterwords. Nice group of guys. We exchanged stories. Turns out my time held up and My first podium was an overall win :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Should have got in the pool for a few minutes to warm up and some speed work in running would help

Event comments:

I am a little bummed there was not a separate trophy for the overall win. I was so happy my wife Gina , my Dad and Joyce were there to see this. Thanks for the cheers and all the support. I'm glad you were able to share this victory with me.
