Pre-race routine:

Three months of training!! Two half marathons, one 20 mile race and a 10k. Ate pasta for most of the week. Started tapering a fortnight ago, straight after the 10k race. Breakfast consisited of a bowl of museli with water instead of milk, two slices of wholemeal toast with olive oil based spread washed down with a cup of water. Ate at about 6.45, three hours before the start. Made 500ml of SIS psp22 (?) added a splash of fruit juice and two disolvable asprins, drank this from leaving home till about 30 minutes before the start. Ate a banana about an hour before the start.
Event warmup:

Got to the event courtesy of some very kind volunteers from the club. Arrived about 1.25 hours before the gun went off. Walked into my start area with two other club members but they went to the loo and I never saw them again. Warmup didn't consist of much more then strolling about, using the loo a few times, finishing off my psp and eating a banana. About half hour before the start I gave my bag into the baggage carts and walked to the start and stretched a little.

Comments:

So much for my plan!! I thought that the old bloke I was trying to beat wouldn't be as strong as me at the finish!! Shows what I know. Anyway, I'm rather pleased with my time, I didn't realise marathons were so hard, I thought that as long as I took it easy it would be OK. After about ten miles of taking it easy I realised that 26.2 miles is a very long way and taking it easy is relative to how long you are going to be working for. In an ideal world I would have liked to have gone under 3:10 but I was close enough and I know that I honestly worked hard for my result. I think I may have been able to knock a little time off but not much. I finished quite strongly. It's hard to remember every emotion that I felt through the race and to be honest it would be dull to try. The bits I will try and remember are the atmosphere created by the crowd, they really are good, the views even on a pretty miserable day are amazing. Driving around London is a total pain and should be avoided at all costs, running through closed roads being cheered by thousands of people is something else and it will be a long time before I forget how that feels.
What would you do differently?:

I would go for a long run closer to race day, perhaps a fortnight before, I'd work harder at my paced runs throughout my training. Stay off the booze the week before a big event, probably consider a sports massage to work some of the lactic acid out. Oh and most importantly I'd run faster!!
Post race
Warm down:

Collected kit bag, fell on floor to nibble and slurp my way through goodie bag. When I got home my wonderful girlfriend massaged my aching limbs.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inexperience.

Event comments:

Today was my first marathon, it's about 13 months since I started training and about 10 months since I joined South London Harriers. When I first started I was running 10k in 52 minutes. Today I've raced an event that a year ago I'd only thought possible to finish. Today I had a good day!

Course: London Marathon, generally quite flat with lumps here and there. The crowd are amazing, I've never run in anyhting like it. When you first start you go through what are considered the crappy bits of town, this is the most fun though, you feel good there are loads of pubs with music playing, kids and adults are out everywhere wishing you well and offering you sweets, bananas, oranges etc. You then head in towards town and at about the 10 mile mark you come to Tower Bridge, after tower bridge you head out into docklands and then turn back on yourself to go toward the city. The course has an out and back part to it where you can see the lead runners on the way out and the slower runners on way in. This point is at 14 and 22 miles. After the 22 mile marker you head along the Thames to Parliament before turning right and running towards Buckingham Palace. The finish is a couple of hundred metres in front of Buckingham Palace on The Mall.
