Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 6am, took a quick shower, ate some cereal and a yogurt and some coffee. Headed to the race around 6:45. Gotta love the races really close to home. Was at the parking area by 7:05. Picked up race packet and set up transition area then went to get race numbers marked. Ate a banana and cliff bar. Put on wet suit.
Event warmup:

Headed down to lake/pond for a quick warm up swim. I am in Wave 13 so it will be a long wait.
Swim
  • 08m 24s
  • 580 yards
  • 01m 27s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started off ok. Had trouble keeping a straight line again. Seemed to stay too far to the right and seem to over correct. Kayaks got in the way of sighting a few times as well. In general, I had a hard time seeing to Buoys and knowing which way to head. Didnt realize how shallow this pond is. Lots of plant life as well that brushed my legs. Kept thinking my timing chip was coming off.
What would you do differently?:

study course more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 18s
Comments:

Included a 200 yard run from pond up to transition. Used wetsuit strippers. In transition, I put on helmet, glasses and race number and headed out. Jump onto bike went ok, but had a harder time spinning shoes to get my feet in. Lost a little time here.
What would you do differently?:

practice more T1.
Bike
  • 41m 55s
  • 16 miles
  • 22.90 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike went ok. Avg over 23 for first loop. Got stuck behind a few cars on the 2nd loop and had to slow down a few times. Probably cost me a minute or so. Thought I was still above 23mph, but computer showed 22.9 when I finally stopped it. So close.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

I always worry about by insoles coming out when I take my feet out of the shoes getting ready for T2. I had a hard time seeing where the dismount line was. Still not really sure. May have jumped off a little too soon.
What would you do differently?:

practice more T2.
Run
  • 22h 12m
  • 3.23 miles
  • 6h 52m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

For me, this was a good run. I have never been below 7:00/miles and averaged below that for each mile. Lap times were also consistent which was nice. Last mile was hard though. Had to really HTFU to keep pace up. Only passed by one person in the last 500 yards.
What would you do differently?:

more running.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank a water and walked around. Found out that my friend crashed on one of the turns and was pretty scrapped up, but he still continued and finished. Great Job.

Event comments:

Good Race. And really glad rain and lightning stayed away. My goal was to break 1:17 which I did (1:15:55). Last year I did 1:24 so big improvement. I dont know why they do 10 year AG's though. I would have been 1st in my AG if it was M45-49. Instead I was 6th. Some really fast people at this race this year. Lines for food were also too long so didn't get to try any of the food. Was getting cold so decided to leave before the awards.
