Total Time = 6h 38m 30s
Overall Rank = 1262/1741
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 62/98
Pre-race routine:

ate a banana and peanut butter toasted sandwich, cup of coffee and gatorade. The entire week prior...excessively hydrated in anticipation of high heat and humidity as forecasted. Took sportlegs and enduralytes
Event warmup:

got to race site early..set-up transition area and pumped up tires. Took in the excitement and tried to calm the nerves
Swim
  • 48m 25s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

not good...had a panic/asthma attack right away and couldn't catch my breath. It took many minutes to calm down and get back into a good stroke. about halfway through the swim my new googles leaked and the antifog got into my eye. struggled the rest of the swim. really struggled with the rocking of the waves. took one 2nd surge before swim
What would you do differently?:

everything!!!!
Transition 1
  • 04m 25s
Comments:

just a long run from swim to transition area...very upset from bad swim so took my time to gather myself and refocus to make sure I had everything for the bike
What would you do differently?:

get wetsuit off quicker
Bike
  • 3h 18m 25s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.93 mile/hr
Comments:

about 5 miles in crashed my bike and had to put my chain back on. At about mile 40 had to pull over and go into the woods due to stomach upset.
had two bottles of accelerade, two profile bottles of water/gatorade, margarita shot blocks and half of a cliff bar plus sportlegs and enduralytes
What would you do differently?:

wait longer to take in the cliff bar and accelerade...need to take it in slower as well to avoid the stomach cramps
Transition 2
  • 02m 51s
Comments:

had to stop at the porta potty but overall had a good transition
Run
  • 2h 24m 27s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

I took this run cautiously due to the heat and wanted to finish not feeling dead. I could have pushed more and not took as many walk breaks. Able to take in fluids very well.
What would you do differently?:

push harder
Post race
Warm down:

praise from coach at finish line was great!!!! should have drank more fluids and taken some pictures

What limited your ability to perform faster:

fear!!!! I just didn't know what to expect with my first half ironman.

Event comments:

I did meet my goal of less than 7 hours as well as meeting my time goals for each of the legs but could have pushed harder. Will definetly do this race next year and push much harder!!
