Pre-race routine:

Watched daughter number two in the kids race. She did well even if she doesn't think so herself.
Event warmup:

I did a couple of warm up laps in the pool and discovered my goggles left eye was leaking like mince. In my pre race enthusiasm I had cleaned my goggles which I suspect had removed all the stuborn stains that made a water tight seal. I had also tightened up my daughters goggles so much so that when she put them on, the strap snapped. As a result she now had my spare set. Her race was finished so with minutes to spare my wife retrieved them from her transition area for me.
Swim
  • 12m 20s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 38s / 100 meters
Comments:

Initial part of the swim felt good. Caught the guy in front and was happy to take a bit of a tow. I felt very easy and could not quite decide whether to overtake this guy or not. Took the chicken option of sitting behind him but now wish I had gone past. By the end of each length I was so much ontop of this guy that I had to do a throw away turn every time.
What would you do differently?:

Definitely overtake. My swim time would probably have been only 10-20sec faster and I would have been a fair bit more knacked but I should have definitely overtaken.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Swam in my tri suit so T1 was pulling my shoes on and grabbing my race belt. This was like lightening compared to last years pulling a shirt on.
Run
  • 23m 28s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 33s  min/mile
Comments:

The course was very muddy, some parts were flooded. On the first circuit I had attempted to avoid the deep puddles but running on the squelchy sloping ground felt a bit precarious so eventually went for the what the hell approach and ran straight through every puddle. Shortly after T1 everyone roundabout me had scampered off out sight bar one guy that I tried, but failed to catch all the way round.
What would you do differently?:

Very happy with my run. The time is pretty good considering the ground conditions.
Post race
Warm down:

Just grabbed all my stuff and headed home for a shower rather than joining the back of the queue.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It would be nice to be more in the middle of the pack. I was close to one of the slowest in my heat so as a result I didn't see many people during the run.

Event comments:

My time for this race is about 20sec faster than last year but sad to say probably all that time was made up in T1 where I didn't put a shirt on.
