Pre-race routine:

Normal breakfast of cereal and a banana then a bag of "GU Chomps" about 30 min prior. I think like the chomps better then regular GU before longer races like this.
Event warmup:

Not so much a "warm up" as a "don't get cold". Conditions were pretty crappy (45 and windy) and it was before sunrise. I stretched a little and jogged some (about 10 blocks) then did a couple of gradual pick-ups to try to get to race pace. Had trouble finding my pace and the announcer were asking people to corral up so I decided to head over. Also figured I'd be better off using the first mile or two to warm up instead of working up a sweat then freezing in the corral.

Comments:

Pre-race plan was to use first three miles to get settled in, focus on being steady and making any adjustments to pace (to get on 8:00/mi avg) for miles 4-6. See how I felt from 6-8 and decide if I want to change pace, use 8-10 to make those adjustments then push it from 10 onward.

I didn't think they had pace groups but saw a couple right before we started. I started right in front of the 1:45 pace group. After things thinned out during the first mile I realized I was at 8:15 but the pace group was still behind me. I decided to try to eat away at the time difference a few seconds each mile and see if the PG would catch up. By mile three I was comfortably down around 7:50/mile and felt really good. I decided to just run my race and if I started to struggle the pace group would catch me and I'd I could use them to help hang on.

Overall I executed my pre-race plan really well but did go out a little faster than planned. Based on some of my workout coming into this I thought I could do better than 8:00/mi but didn't want to blow it early. I think the my plan helped me push it down a little early on but still keep things in check and not get carried away.
What would you do differently?:

Very happy, good solid run.

I had a GU roctane around mile 6. Not sure if I really needed it or not as I was planning to just get by with the pre-race chomps and gatorade. However the gatorade was weak and inconsistent so I figured it wouldn't hurt to have a gu.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched a little. Put on my warmup pants and jacket then went inside the (heated) tent for the "post race party" for a couple of beers and irish stew.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

As always I could benefit from loosing a little more weight and training better. However, I'm VERY happy with my performance.

Event comments:

Great race. Well organized. Post race party is sponsored by Yuengling, 'nuff said. The give very nice finisher premiums too. Both this year and last (when I did the full) I got a nice long sleeve t-shirt and hat at the finish line.

Course: Big "lolly-pop" out and back up Pacific Ave, around/through Ft. Story then back down Pacific to the boardwalk. Dead flat. Petty bad head wind at the start and cross wind in parts of Ft. Story. I was expected a tailwind on the way back but it had laid down by then.
