Pre-race routine:

All I really expected of myself was to forget about lots of stuff in my life for a few minutes and have some fun. I've really needed to take some time for myself and this "race" was my best excuse for doing that. The format was sprint distance and as long you did the 3 events between midnight Friday and midnight Sunday you were in.
Event warmup:

Swam a few laps in the pool.
Swim
  • 09m 56s
  • 450 yards
  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

It seems like forever since I've taken the time to go swimming but it felt amazing to get back in the water. It was like I never left. Everything felt natural. Time is a composite of my best 4.5 100's.

Comments:

I was thinking a lot about Jen during my bike ride. At the time I was out on my bike, she was getting more MRI's to figure out why she's been so weak on one side of her body lately. Every time I felt like slacking off, thinking about her was all I needed to put some more meat to the pedals and push myself a little harder. A few minutes were lost to traffic lights and waiting to cross busy roads, but not a bad time.

  • 3.1 miles

Comments:

Same as the bike, every time I felt like slacking off a little bit, I'd think about Jen. In her current state, just getting out of bed with minimal help from someone is a major accomplishment some days. Who am I to waste the health I have to be able to run as much as possible if all Jen wants is to be able to walk under her own power without having to hold on to everything around her like a toddler.
What would you do differently?:

Not walk the 0.2 of a mile that I walked.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Um, squat for training since early January?

Event comments:

This race is just what I needed. I'm actually really happy with my times considering that I haven't done jack for training for a while with everything else going on. It really makes me appreciate the work I've done on my fitness to this point. Now I'm really excited to start training more regularly once Jen gets home.

What was really cool is that my 5 year nephew did his version if this triathlon too (1/10 of the distances that I did) and he had a blast. it was his first and it was really cool to listen to a 5 year old's triathlon philosophy. Lots of stuff we can all learn:

- "Triathlons are HARD. I'm having fun, but triathlons are hard."
- "I need to stop at the top of this hill Uncle Paco. The pain in my legs is the energy that I'm making."
- "I want to practice more so that I can be a little better next time."
