Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 4am and had a light breakfast of wheat toast with jelly, peanut butter and honey with some soy milk. Drove to my dad's house and he took me out to Dodger Stadium. Stomach was a little upset in the morning and because of this I skipped the gel that I would have liked to eat just before the start.
Event warmup:

Didn't really warm up much....only some light stretching, a little jog to the port-o-potties and back and that was it. I had to fight to get into the corrals as they were only letting people with wristbands through, then they would say that they were full, then decide to open them back up again. I ended up being let in and while I was supposed to be in the "C" corral I snuck past the gaurd into the "B" corral and was able to get up towards the front where I wanted to be.

Comments:

This was my first time doing a stand alone marathon (I did an IM last year), and my build to this race was a bit shorter then planned, so I wasn't as confident as I would have liked to be. I wanted to run a 3:20 so I started off with the 3:20 pace group.

Obviously the weather wasn't ideal, but to be honest I really didn't mind the rain all that much, until the finish that is. I could have done without the strong winds though.

My stomach came around a bit and I took in my first gel around mile 4 and was feeling pretty good. The first 15-18 miles all went by pretty smooth, with the normal ups and downs. I started to get a little tired after the last small climb up to the VA Hospital around mile 22. It was at that point when I started to lose touch with the 3:20 pace group.

I took about a 5 second walk break through an aid station, took a gel and drank some water, then started back up at around an 8:00m/m pace. Within about a half mile I got my energy back up and was able to bring my pace back under 7:40. I had a pretty good kick to the finish line and almost caught back to up to the 3:20 group.

What would you do differently?:

Not sure I would do anything different, I was pretty happy with the performance.
Post race
Warm down:

I was freezing within a minute of stopping. I grabbed a space blanket and a gatorade and kept walking to look for my dad. Found him, walked 2 miles to the car and got changed. I've never been happier to put on dry clothes and crank up the heater.

Event comments:

Can't thank the volunteers enough, they were awesome and I had some fun high fiving them towards the end.
