Swim
Comments: Weather was good. There was a slight chop on the water but nothing that really would have affected swim performance. Going out from the start, I had a little issue sighting and had to course correct 2 or 3 times, but once I made the turn for the across section of the swim, I was right on the bouys and felt like I was in a good groove and comfortable in the water. Made the final turn back and was still right on the bouys. Never found anyone to draft with and about 1/2 way I started to get into a lot of traffic from earlier swim waves but felt like I worked my way through very well. What would you do differently?: Maybe push a little harder. I think I left a little bit out on the swim course. I feel like I could have easily been a minute or 2 faster out of the water. Transition 1
Comments: Out of the water, cap, goggles, and wetsuit came off quickly and easily. Made my way into transition area. dried off my feet a little and put on socks and bike shoes. Strapped the helmet and grabbed the bike. Once at the mount line it took me a few seconds to get clipped in and going. I need to work on a running mount before the next race. What would you do differently?: I knew T1 was going to be a little slow due to the wetsuit and having to get my socks on. But I need to work on getting on the bike quicker and getting rolling. Bike
Comments: I averaged 18.06 out and 21.71 coming back. The headwind was tough and probably steady in the 15 to 20mph range going out. I had trouble getting comfortable in the saddle and I had to keep sitting up or moving around on the saddle for the first hour. I finally settled in shortly before the turn back towards town and really felt good the whole way back. I worked on keeping my HR in check and focused on nutrition and hydration the entire bike ride. What would you do differently?: Dont know why I couldnt get comfortable on the saddle. This is the first time I have ahd this come up so its something I will have to watch over the next few weeks. Other than that, I dont think I could have done anything differently. I felt like I had a good bike leg and set myself up for a good run Transition 2
Comments: I wanted to work on my transitions after my last HIM. I felt like I could make up a few minutes here so my plan was socks on in T1 so all I had to do was bike shoes off, helmet off and run shoes on. I also took the items I wanted to carry out of transition (salt tabs and gu packs) and taped them together. This worked very well and I had a very quick T2. I also had a bottle of water in my shirt from the bike course that was still 1/4 full so a few splashed over my head and a quick drink going out kinda felt good as I hit the run course. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I think I executed T2 as best I could Run
Comments: The only other 70.3 I did back in October, I feel apart on the run so the entire race was a setup for this last 13.1 miles. I paced well in the water. I revamped my nutrition and hydrastion on the bike and added salt tabs at scheduled intervals. I came out of transition wondering how the legs were going to repsond and how the body was going to feel. after the first lap, I realized my plan was working. I was smiling, focusing on a good consistance pace and making sure I kept the body cool and hydrated. I would take atleast a little water at each aid station. But always got some type of fluid each mile, splashed some water on the body and grabbed a sponge to carry with me. Then about 1/2 way to the next aid station I would squeeze the sponge out over my head to get a little more cooling action before the next station. BY the time the last lap rolled around the legs were starting to hurt a little but I was on the last lap so I pushed through and picked up the pace and really finsihed strong and felt awesome crossing the finish line really strong. What would you do differently?: Nothing.. Plan was executed well and I never had any issues on the run Post race
Warm down: PIZZA and BEER!!!!! stretched a little and got packed up to head back to Dallas What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing. I think I executed the plan I had to get me to the run and then based on how I felt after the forst lap, I picked up the pace and executed the remainder of my hydration plan as best I could Event comments: First time racing Galveston but would definitely go back and do it again. Dinner the night before with friends. Salad and soup. Keep the meal light and easy on the stomach. Back to the hotel early check the gear a couple times to ensure I have everything. Eat a bowl of cereal before bed and lights out by 9pm. I have done this the last few races and it seems to work really well for me. Race morning starts at 5am. Breakfast is Oatmeal, yogurt, and a banana. Drink some OJ and then start hydrating with water up until race time.
Unable to swim until it was time for our swim wave to get in the water so pre-race warmup was really just stretching and trying to relax and spend time with the family and trying to think about those things I want to concentrate on during the race.
